New to off-roading and just want to know what I’d be getting myself into by driving through deep water/mud.

So far I’ve avoided it and if I see a deep out I turn around a take a different trail. How deep of a puddle can you drive in without damage if anything? Any maintenance that you have to do after missing besides pressure washing? When should you change the oil in your differential (I assume you can’t submerge it)?

Any other maintenance items to consider aside from an alignment job?

    Any pointers/tips would be appreciated!

    Balls deep?

Edit: equivalent to the shallow end of a swimming pool

I avoid deep mud at all costs because that shit gets in everything.
If you are gonna do water crossings you need to do the diff breather mod. Google it.
Personally, if I HAVE to do a water crossing, I stop and let the diffs cool down to ambient and then will never go past the top of my tires deep... and go really slow to prevent bow wave.
Seriously, mud just wears things out 10X faster. Is it fun? Yes. Is it expensive? Yes again. Water is one thing but I h8 mud.

I had to ford a whopper of a puddle in the Walmart parking lot the other day to get to my favorite flex curb. It was either that or climb a hella-steep speed bump and I don't have a locker.

You've got some reading to do, but I'll at least point this out before you hit this often incorrect debate - you do not need a snorkel.

Things to read up on: rear diff(erential) breather mod.

As for your alignment job - driving in water won't affect this unless you ram into hidden obstacles.

Fuck mud. I killed my starter so far thankfully the worst thing that happened

    DSC_0179.JPG.jpg
This killed my starter. Coppingers cove in Tennessee. Not the deep part either. It was just up to the headlights in the deeper part

I wouldn't go any deeper. Gotta get a good initial wave when going in and follow behind it

I'd go just fast enough to create a bow wave.. that's what you want.

Been in water with bow wave washing a little over the hood of my Rubicon, crossing flood water reservoir in San Antonio. No water contamination afterwards, bow wave is key.. Been in other crossing situations with my Jeep but that was the deepest.
