About to buy my first 3rd gen from another state, and my DMV said to make sure the sticker under the hood says something about CA emissions compliance.

goinf to ask the dealership to snap a pic of the emissions sticker; but I was wondering if someone here can send me a pic of their emissions sticker under their hood so I know what I’m looking for?

I had to get mine inspected by CHP but maybe you're buying new?

It was a bit of a PIA really, especially since the DMV recorded original title when my truck was originally sold and was only out of state for about a year.

Yeah I’m buying new. Why’d you have to have CHP inspect and not the dmv?

do you expect me to run into these issues if I buy new?

also I don’t see the image you linked

Yeah, I self-fixed realizing it was a gmail linky, sorry bout that.

DMV was closed most of 2020, is it back open now? CHP was the only game in town, wait was 2-3 weeks, tags were well past expired before I got a new piece of paper, didn't get plates until 6+ months but the whole COVID mess is a big part of that. At least I had nowhere to go so I didn't care that much.

Thanks for the pic. It’s a bit different than the DMV’s example though...yeah I called the DMV and they said they’re open but on a first come first serve basis. A little scary as I imagine a lot of folks are hitting up the dmv in person and without appointments. They can prob only allow like 40 people to wait in line due to distancing

that California portion is all they need to see to determine it’s CA emissions compliant?

Let me know how buying new goes. The prices out of some of the dealerships seem so much better than CA pricing that I kind of kick myself for buying used. But it was also strategic b/c I'd be so sad about tearing apart a nice new truck and even more sad about my kids trashing it.

^^ Above as an example of a truck which I think would go for ~2-3k more in CA.

It’s insanely cheaper out of state. CA didn’t even have all the options I wanted. Ended up getting it for $3.5K cheaper out of state

Also, quote from CHP (again this wouldn't be a concern for buying new):

If the emissions label under the hood is still intact then we can use a REG 31. If it is missing or illegible then you will need to go back to the DMV to pick up a REG 124 in person.

Should have no problem. Tacomas are 50 state emission legal.

I am in CA, just bought outside of CA, waiting for truck to bring it to me.

Last 3 years, I bought 5 new cars outside of CA. No issues at all. I remember when we used to buy 49 state emission cars and all the hassle

I saved $3400 buying out of state, not to mention Toyota wont' even allow me the truck I wanted here in So Cal.

On average, last 5 years buying outside has saved me average 6K per ride vs buying local.

Heck buying used outside of CA isn't an issue either. We bought a used RC-F and a 88 Land Cruiser last year, one RENO and one Helena, and was pretty easy. On the Land Cruiser, they looked at emission sticker under hood. Woman who "inspected" it didnt even know what to look for. After a few min she said "picture is faded, I will jsut pass it"

Also remember my truck is 2016 so it seems quite expected that the sticker might look different on a 2021.

I haven’t purchased it yet. Just put down the deposit...the vehicle doesn’t even have a VIN number assigned either.

but the MSRP was like 42K, and got it for 41k OTD. There was a markup in CA which had a vehicle with lower spec have an OTD price of like 46K...

can anyone sort out what all the stuff following the California stuff is? Only know that ULEV is ultra low emission vehicle. Anyone go through this that knows if this is what the DMV wants to see?

Sorry ... no clue about that but I did buy a duplicate sticker from Toyota for my sport hood when I had it painted and installed

    I’m a DMV VIN Verifier

VIN VERIFICATION is required when you register an out of state vehicle into CA or when you are reviving Junk or Salvage cars.

i do DMV Services at my establishment along with Smog check

lets the state know the engine model and later in if anything happens they can go back and see if the motor was ever swapped with a stolen or lost motor.

each emission label can be different. I wouldn’t go off an picture that is illegal and will Void the VIN Verification and if it is Re- Verified by CHP it will get caught.

Oh nice! You’re just the person I want to talk to haha. Can you confirm whether the above pictures of the emissions labels would pass a CA VIN check for emissions for registering a new out of state vehicle in CA? (Buying in TX)

oh, I guess I should first ask if you’re based in CA :p

Mainly looking at the Year and Test Group Family Number.

That’s all the emission label is used for during a VIN Verification
