I never thought I'd hear the words Wagon Wheel and must-do used in the same sentence. I'll go with it. Maybe it will help thin out the Buttermilks. Please re-post this on every climbing site you are on. Thanks. lol

I had forgotten the bridge was removed. It's been that long since I was last passed that way with HBMurphy.

I've used Wagon Wheel as a night time stop over on my way to DV. Buttermilks, AH, and the other Bishop area bouldering places are all overrun.

I'd hit the granite boulders up by the Striped Rock in July before hitting the Butters again... I'll do my best to encourage the bouldering community to give the 395 corridor a rest...maybe send them to something closer to the Bay Area? :)

Well I guess this is now a historical picture then... Yeah shorty after our run it was closed, some said for good. This has happened to multiple areas I had been previously been, but happy to hear it was opened up again. Hopefully the new section is a safer.

Dang, I was hoping to drive over that bridge this season, after seeing a few photos like this one. Reminds me of the trestles on Rollins Pass.

Love Panamint Valley and it's intimate relationship to DV and how the state of CA came to be so prominent. It is a forgotten part of history.

...Heading back down the canyon, the views into Panamint Valley were awesome, even with smoke from the Creek Fire in California's Sierras. I can only imagine how my breath would be taken away on a clear day from this same location...

In light of the less that stellar start of the new year, I think the group should consider where we want to hole up until 2022. I’m thinking the Striped Butte/Geologist Cabin area. Secluded, nearby water, open terrain for good fields of fire, back way out by Mengel Pass. But what do I know, I’m still trying to get out there for the first time. Lol.

I’m joking! Not trying to get a political comment ban!

looking for a spot to camp and have a small fire (bringing my own pit) with my son. I know the campgrounds are closed inside the park and backcountry camping doesn't allow campfires. Looking for BLM or any other land just outside the park. Coming from LA area, but plan to do Titus Canyon and a few other "easy" trails my lifted/good tires 2wd tacoma can handle. Someone recommended Ballarat. Probably going to sleep in the bed of the truck. Any recommendations? Just need a few nights. Getting sick of being at home. I've been to DV once and it's amazing how huge it is. Did all the non-offroad touristy stuff. Thanks guys

We should all go camp in a Walmart lot. Whip out the solo stoves and party on...

As far as Panamint Valley goes north of Ballarat along the dirt road there are a number of places you can stop and make camp that are on BLM land. There are also a few roads that run west from Panamint Valley Road north of the turn off to Wildrose before you get to the 190 that also provide a variety of spots to camp.

On the other side of the park towards Beatty is BLM land and there are a variety of spots along dirt roads that come off NV-374 (road between Daylight Pass and Beatty). This positions you well if you are intending to do Titus Canyon Road first thing in the morning. This area is at about 3500' so going to be colder than Panamint Valley spots. Also be sure to pay attention to the weather and closures as Titus Canyon Road does get closed in the winter after colder storms due to snowfall or ice from time to time.

Also on the east side of the park exiting via 190 towards Death Valley Junction it is BLM land south of the road past Ryan. These areas tend to see a lot of campers and RV's though so I've never camped there as I don't like company.

Those are all the closest spots on BLM land that I know of.

pulled out my map and i remember the spots you're talking about, especially to the east near junction. that's the route I took home when I last visited four years ago. stopped in Shoshone for a delicious meal and beer. what a cool little town. we ended up naming our dog after that town when we got her a few years ago.
