Rant alert:
Why is it so hard for RTT manufacturers to take more than one or two good picture of their products?? Seriously, I can find more pictures (and way higher quality) of a friggin 9V battery on Amazon for like $8 than I can find of a $3,495 CVT RTT! Its not just CVT either. If Im about to drop a few thousand on something online, I want more than 4 pictures. AND I want pictures that weren't taken with a potato from 2002..

Thats always driven me nuts. But I guess when demand is this high you dont need to take good pictures


Anyway thats my rant as Im sitting here looking at used RTTs haha

 

Because the RTTs are all in china until they stamp their brand name on it and drop ship to you.

check out Treeline outdoors. I have one of their tents. A little more pricey then the others but my wife and I can truly tell the difference in build quality. We love it! Couldn’t be happier. Call and talk to Jeff and he’ll answer all your questions.

when I was looking to buy I ran into the same thing. I even called several companies to ask for specs I couldn’t find on their website and some of them couldn’t even answer my questions (about their own product!). Jeff knows his product and is the man. He sent me samples of their fabrics (tent material, rain fly material, and road cover material) for each color they offer and a sample of their base material! (which I still need to send back, sorry treeline) all a no charge to me!

CVT sent me a cut up “back pack that’s similar to our tent” and a scrap piece of canvas from who knows what. They charged me $5 to send it and put it in the mail.... so a stamp... not that I’m worried about $5 when I’m ready to spend thousands, but it’s the principal haha.

FRS wasn’t any better, didn’t know about fabric specs except what’s on the website and when asked if they could send me some samples they simply said “oh we don’t do that”.

sorry for my rant, but when you go to buy something so expensive blind (no tent dealers very close to me) you want to know as much as you can, I get it.

Quick question for you all, I am considering changing my set up from a softshell rooftop tent to a camper shell with a hard shell roof top tent mounted on top of it. I am likely going to get the Alu-cab Explorer canopy because I like the light weight and look of it. I am currently thinking of getting a Roofnest Falcon, but I can't decide which size to get. The xl is 60" wide, which is the same width as the top of the bedrails, but likely a little wider than the top of the Alu-cab canopy.

I could get the smaller size Falcon, but I like to take 2 kids camping with me and I don't think that the 3 of us will fit in the smaller tent. What do you all think, will the roof nest Falcon XL be too wide and look stupid on the top of a Tacoma? How much do you think it will stick out on either side of the cab?

Does anyone have this tent mounted on top of the Tacoma that can post a picture?

The best part though is the steel bed rack for it. Manufactured in Calgary, very reasonable price, solid through all kinds of conditions

 

Just got my Yakima skyrise I used to have on my Tahoe up on my new RCI bed rack. Hitting Joshua tree this weekend.

I have a camper with the sparrow eye. It’s about the same width as the regular falcon and no way you will be comfortable with 2 kids and yourself in the regular falcon.

 

Here’s a 55” FSR hard shell (which is 60” wide exterior) on top of my runner. Should be similar widths and overhang if not less overhang for you.

 

I'm sorry but paying $150 for clamps is a little out there imo.

completely agree with you. While im sure they're nice, they wont be purchased by me.

 

any advice on winter camping with a rtt? dont have a mr buddy or electric blanket. temps are supposed to be around mid 20s, my sleeping bags are rated for 20 degrees, so that should be fine. planning on boiling water, filling a nalgene, and taking that into my bag with me. im in a kukeman 3 season, so hopefully that will work out. i think the main difference between the 3 and 4 season is the bottom plate from plastic to metal? idk. im nervous excited

 

Sleeping bags are rated on what keeps you from dying, not what keeps you "warm". You can look into it more if you are curious, but basically the marketing people always use that lowest rating because it sounds better. So that being said, I would advise bringing a few extra blankets to supplement. One below and one above the bag. The tent will give you a tiny bit of shelter / warmth compared to outside, but not much. Worst case you dont need them. Really the biggest issue will be condensation inside the tent. You can partially open a few windows to gain extra fresh air flow. But at the end of the day unless its a really dry night with a breeze, expect to wake up with either frost or dew inside the tent. So just be prepared for that and know that it may impact your sleep as your hat, sleeping bag, etc may become slightly damp.

Also as a side note be aware that youll most likely want to open the tent after your trip sometime to really let it dry out

Otherwise, just pack more clothes than you think youll need. Layers are your friend and worst case you can always take some off. Also extra hats and gloves just in case something gets wet or lost or whatever.

 

I just camped in the mid 20s last weekend with no heater and I was toasty warm. Here's my gear breakdown.


Bedding: Exped megamat in lieu of RTT mattress due to high R value. Sleeping bag (when I combine the intermediate and the patrol bag, it's rated to -30). Down comforter, folded in half, on top of that. I also shoved a big down snowboarding jacket at my feet for even more insulation because my feet get cold easily.

It sounds like a lot, and it is, but goddddd damn was I warm and comfortable.
