Like mentioned the 20F is a lower limit survival rating. Check the bag to see if the list a “comfort” rating. That’s the rating you want to use. When I know it’s really really cold. I put a wool blanket folded on top of my mattress for extra insulation. Wool or synthetic base layer will be nice. The Nalgene is a good plan. But I use handwarmers now as they stay warm longer. An extra person in the tent always helps as well.

ive used this in my Tepui Ayer before. 5min on while getting for bed. Then turn it off and 5min on in the morning to get out of bed. Works great but just need to be very careful with it.

ive been thinking of getting something like this. im just concerned about burning things and not being careful enough. it gets kinda cramped in the tent with me and my gf and very very possible something will hit it and melt/catch on fire

true on the comfort part. ive taken the bag pretty low backpacking before and it works well with a decent pad. maybe ill take my backpacking pads with high r values just in case. ill deff take way too many blankets and a costco box of hand warmers too.

shoving extra clothes in my bag sounds like the way to go. fingers crossed i dont get frost bite

Yea. That’s a real concern. You can always put it on a small board. A Mr. Heater Buddy has auto shutoff. I got the one I have because I plan to carry it to climbing crags with me. It’s a little more portable and easier to light.

You can also light it up first to warm up the tent then shut it off and get inside after.

Yup I do that too, an insulated Thermarest between the mattress and the bag.

    It's worth it, for sure.

I borrowed my roommates, so I plan on buying my own. As others said, you can leave it to warm up your tent before you get in. Then warm yourself up when you wake up in the morning. Since I did not have a good sleeping bag, I woke up a few times throughout the night to warm myself up with it, so it helps a lot.

Even useful to have when you're getting a fire going in the morning too.

The Amazon one I have heated up my tepui Ayer really well in about 5min. So I’m sure the smaller heater buddy will be good enough for RTT. Safer as well.

Living in Canada and wanting to extend my camping season as much as possible I have tried a few things. Here's what I have found to be most beneficial while being scared of propane heaters lighting my tent on fire: Putting hand/foot warmers in my sleeping bag. Having a polar fleece blanket under my sleeping bag, most cold will come from underneath you. I also had a 12volt electric blanket and a portable power pack, that was excellent until the blanket stopped working. Thermal base layers with heavy duty wool socks. A touque always! And I've worn mittens when it's cold enough. My bag is rated to -10°c I have used it up to -15°c with my extras.
What I'm going to try next for winter camping: adding an annex so I can hang a heater away from anywhere where it could start a fire. A winter sleeping bag liner designed to add 14°c to a sleeping bag rating. Reusable hand and body warmers but I don't think these last long enough to get me through a whole night. Adding 100% wool blanket in and/or in top of my sleeping bag.

Although safe and super warm but overkill for RTT would be the portable diesel heaters.

but if you camp in a group, you can prob hear 2-3 tents all at once with one heater. hahaha

If you're winter camping in snow you also need to consider making the whole tent too warm as snowfall will turn into ice making a mess when you close it or damaging the tent.

I don’t have any experience myself. But my friend has used his Amazon diesel heater and loves it. I saw some other members on here using them too.

edit pic below of a TW member heating 3 tents with his Amazon diesel heater.
