I've run into an issue and hoping someone could offer some knowledge.

When I bought my 2000 Tacoma, it came with the jack, but the tool kit that contains the jack crank handle, extension, and end piece was no where to be found. I decided it would be a good idea to practice changing out the spare should I ever need to, but I can't even find the tools to lower the spare tire to get started. I called local salvage yards within a 60 mile radius and apparently it's like looking for a needle in a haystack looking for the tool kit for one of these. I looked online and all I can find is the tool kit for a 2nd gen Tacoma. Does anyone know if that tool kit would at least lower the spare tire? Does anyone know where I can buy a tool kit for a 1st gen? The dealer would be a last resort for me. It bugs me that I have a spare and it's completely useless without the tools to be able to use it.

None of the junkyards in the Mat-Su Valley, Alaska have the tool kit. I don't know if the ones on EBAY or Amazon fit or not.

Very hard to come by. Rarely pop up in b/s/t marketplace here and when they do they’re gone in a day. And for a pretty penny.

In a local u-pull-it yard, I found the spare lowering kit in a T100 and it works perfectly for my Tacoma. I got lucky and happened to notice the black storage bag under a front seat(not its normal storage spot).

There is no way this salvage yard would have known it was in the vehicle for inventory purposes. You may have to do a search for them yourself, not just call, if that is possible in your area.

There are a bunch on ebay ranging from $25-$150. You can probably make a rod to lower the spare and at harbor freight you can get a breaker bar and a universal lug nut socket kit for around $25

The spare lowering rod is not really hard to recreate and I’d prefer a breaker bar and the socket you need for the lug nuts. If I were to make one I’d make something like a T and not the hook (which I know serves double duty for the jack, but a little piece of solid stock or a 1/4” socket extension does fine for the jack).

I get the breaker bar and the socket for the lug nuts, but how would I make the T to lower the spare tire? I would need a piece roughly 40mm long, and then a rod roughly 400mm long, then another handle for leverage, but I don't know how I would assemble something like that would be strong enough to lower the spare. It's on there pretty good.

My OEM jack disappeared but I still have the pouch with the handle/extension to it. DM me if you'd like em. I am keeping my wheel wrench with lock though

Yeah without a welder it won’t be easy. Since I have I’d use 3/8 ratchet extensions and cut them up to make it out of with some round stock.

I have yet to come across any Toyota that the spare tire winch was not seized up and had to be cut off.

Even extending a hose from the spare to check air pressure out the back it was a pain to check the air pressure.

@Chugiak76 I don't know if this is helpful to you or not. I just finished restoring and augmenting my tire changing tools. Here is what I now have:
Tire Change Tools-Number coded.jpg Spare Tire Changing tools notes.jpg
    EDIT
It turns out that #4 "Spare Tire Removal Key" does not apply, as there is no actual "lock" fitted into the spare tire winch. Item #5 fits into the winch to turn it, as shown below. I believe this is the "stock" set-up:
Spare Tire Winch and Tool 480 x 640.jpg

Items #1 to #7 were with the truck when I bought it (used). I cleaned and painted the black ones.
I tapped new threads in #5,#6 & #7 for new set screws (original set screws were missing).
I will likely add my torque wrench to the tool kit.
I also keep a 12 volt inflator and tire pressure gauge in my tool kit.
    Good Luck.

Are you saying the spare tire winch will most likely need to be cut off?

He’s up in the north east, idk how bad Alaskan rust issues are if they don’t bribe the streets as much.

I think item #4 was an option that came with the truck if it came with wheel locks. I believe it's the key. I'm hoping that it won't be necessary for me to use that tool to get my spare tire down since I don't have that option.

Whoa, that's pretty unnecessary for most of us. I never have needed an 3 foot extension to break free any lug nuts. If you do, you're likely to have damaged wheel studs, which you should put a bucket of new spares in the truck as well.
I have rotated the tires on my 1st gen with the stock bottle jack and toolbag contents several times. I do "cheat" when I put the lug nuts back on - I use a deep 21mm socket attached to a 3/4" drive torque wrench to ensure proper ugga duggas.

I'm like 99% sure that all generations use the same tool kit. A $50k TRD Pro uses the same size lug nuts as my truck does.

The ones for 2nd/3rd gens I see on Amazon etc... look exactly like mine.
