You’re already ahead of the game with a 2021 which has the ECU calibration 4B81.

 

Get k&n type on eBay is like 150bucks. It help the throttle response. I got Trd intake because fcking California smog.

you could add a magnuson supercharger for well over $7,000 for 90 hp...some think thats the way to go...

 

Unfortunately with naturally aspirated engines it’s expensive to gain significant power.

maybe initially try keeping ETC button on or keeping in S mode to select the gear. Besides that, you’re looking at VF tunerr as the next step up which I think $390 but can’t confirm.

regearing diffs definitely helps but it’s expensive >$1k all in.

 

You will not lose any power adding larger tires. Your engine makes the power. If you are worried about rear-wheel torque, that will change but so slightly that you will not really notice. I had 33's on with stock engine and gearing and couldn't even notice any performance difference - but MPG changed and the speedo isn't accurate! If you really want to add the HP then get an OV tune and select the 33" tire option - that made a huge difference in how the truck performs. Gears are massively expensive and are a last resort for when you go to 35's. Cold air intakes are cute, but not worth even close for that cash. Finding a person who has OV tune software and cables and paying them that same amount (or likely less) to flash your ECU would be the best solution.

 

Do you void your warranty if you go with OVTune?

 

Not directly but it does give toyota the ability to deny a warranty claim if they think the tune was responsible for whatever failed.

 

Its almost impossible for them to detect it though. When they plug in, all they see is the stock ECU ID. The only thing they see is, when the values were reset (like when you flash a tune), but that also happens every time you disconnect the battery.

 

DO NOT add a oiled air filter to your truck. It will gunk up your maf and cause all sorts of issues. The stock paper filter is about as good as it gets.

 

A lot of guys say that it will gunk up the MAF, but I had oiled filters on a lot of my previous vehicles and never one issue with them.

Operator error when oiling? Probably.

 

Dust alone can cause a maf to throw codes so putting oil upstream in the airflow is a horrible idea.

Show me proof of a oiled filter performing better than the stock paper filter and then we can talk about the juice being worth the squeeze.

 

I got no proof, but ive always felt like the throttle response improved a bit. I had all MT vehicles.

The sound improves too a bit, which i like.

Did you ever run oiled air filters?

 

I being using K&n for my car about 80k miles not problems. Dont over oil it and wait for oils dry little bit before using it.

I have an aFe oiled filter and really think its night and day over the paper filter. As previously mentioned-- better throttle response and a slight change to the intake sound are what you're paying for. The tree hugger in me likes the idea of less crap in a landfill, but I assume I am more on an island with that "perk". Either way, don't over oil it and you shouldn't have issues. I kept my old paper filter to run for the days I clean/oil the filter so that I can make sure the aFe is completely dried before putting it back in the truck.... but never had an issue. Paired with OV tune and the truck runs how it should have come from the factory in the first place.

 

Oiled filters = Garbage.

I stopped running the oiled filters after my 2005 Nisan Titan with AFE, used numerous K&N before that. I was very diligent with cleaning and oiling every 15K miles (AZ is dusty). My method was to clean the filter then oil with the aerosol can using 3 light coats. After oiling I would hook up the filter to my electric leaf blower intake and suck the oil through for 5 minutes then blot both sides of the filter with blue paper shop towels to remove any excess oil. Within a day I always ended up with a stumbling idle and I’d have to pull the mass air sensor and clean it with the aerosol spray. At one point I ran a piece of cheese cloth through the intake tube and it came back black with gunk, that was the day that intake system went in the trash. There is no free lunch, a less restrictive filter of similar size has to do a worst job of actually filtering.

When I got my 2006 Dodge 2500 diesel and started researching intakes it became clear that oiled filters were junk on a turbo diesel application. There were plenty of forum threads showing collapsed filters, turbo intakes colored red with oil, and failed piston rings clogged with crap after <100K miles. I met the Volant guys at SEMA in 2008 and helped test their new prototype Powercore intake system. That system uses a Donaldson dry filter like the stock Ford and GM 2500/3500 diesel trucks went to around the same time. I did oil analysis after, the filter dropped the silica levels significantly in my truck in AZ compared to the universal average from Blackstone (2ppm in mine vs 7ppm average, there was a long thread on diesel truck resource.com). I ran that system for 95K until I sold the truck, I replaced the filter once after 60K miles in 11 years. The intake tube was always clean and the truck ran great. I don’t think any of those systems give you more power without other mods, but I liked that the Volant Powercore was actually providing cleaner air to the intake.

I’m reasonably sure that Toyota, with their billions of dollars spent in R&D, had put a filter on the truck that will support adequate performance and high durability. I wouldn’t change the stock filter unless I were supercharging or adding a snorkel. Oiled filters have less restriction because they let more junk through, that will not help in the engine reaching high miles trouble free.
