e-rated tire pressure

So i've had my nitto ridge grappler LT285-70-17 e rated for 6 month and toyed with higher pressures. I did't realize the lift shop spec out E tires. But i've been running about 32 and still wasn't as pleased how rough they felt. So i tried the chalk test and it seems 28 is good on the front and looks like i could go lower than 26 in the rear. My tpms light is on even though the pressure is higher than tech stream. Any ideas? Besides swapping to like C rated. That's the eventual plan later this year unless there's a good solution to keep these.

 

Did you do the lift and tires at the same time? If so, do you have the ability to swap back to stock tires? I did my lift first and 285/75r16 E Ridge Grapplers later. Running 32psi and didn't notice much of a ride difference when i changed tires.

 

I did do the lift, wheels, and tires at the same time. And my old wheels and tires are gone. I was running falken wildpeaks in 265/70/16 and changed to 17 when i lifted

 

I did the front lift 5100s stock coils, drove for a week. Then AALs, drove for 2 weeks, then tires. The ride really stiffened up with the AALs but that was expected. I did it this way after reading the horror stories on here about vibes and noises and wanted to be able to pinpoint any potential issues. Didn't have any.

 

Interesting. Yeah i ran into issues because what my shop chose to do with my lift. And many troubles with traction control that are almost resolved. But i am also running 5100 struts with 888 coils and a 1.5" rear block. But you did notice a rougher ride

 

Front rode same as stock, although i could the valving is different, just the rear stiffened. From the sound of it the 888s are stiffer even though they have a lower weight rating than stock.

 

Did you set your tire pressures cold, then reset the TPMS system?

 

I mean it is cold out but no i aired them down after driving 1/2 hour. Then did the chalk test.

 

That is a shame they got you the Es when Cs are available in that size. Es are an acquired taste for sure.

Don't waste your time with the chalk test. There is nothing scientific to it. As tempting as it is to go lower with the air pressure, resist the urge. Lower pressure = more heat. More heat = shorter tire life. The draw back to the increased pressure is that you get the rough ride. That is something that is almost unavoidable with Es. The only way you can improve it would be to throw another thousand pounds on to get the ride like you would in the 3/4 ton trucks they are designed for. I would go back to the shop and raise hell to get you the correct tires. I realize that there are some sizes that Ds and Es are unavoidable, but this particular size isn't. They should know better.

As for your TPMS, did they reuse the factory sensors? You should be able to get techstream to sort it out yourself. There is a ton of information out there. Tonered has the most comprehensive info.

 

I'm just impressed that someone actually did the chalk test.

 

The chalk test is to ensure you have proper contact patch with the road. To much psi and the center of the tire wears, to low and the outside wears and creates excessive heat.

 

I wish i could but as its been 6 months i'm not sure i could do that. I already rose hell and got them to fix the lift and they did that free. Yes i did reuse the factory tpms sensors. How do i use techstream to sort it out. I was trying to click around but couldnt figure out how to change the tpms settings.

Lol i did search around and after seeing lots of people say to chalk test i chose to do that before asking questions.

 

Unfortunately that isn't actually how it works and it why there is nothing scientific about it. No one should waste their time putting chalk on their tires.

 

Look dude, I know your trying to start an argument its what you do in every post. It doesn't need to be scientific to work, the chalk test is giving you a ball park on the correct psi to run your tires at.

Looking at your pic, I'm not sure why you would have a light, unless there is a factor applied to the threshold?

My best suggestion would be to set the pressures cold and hold the TPMS reset button under the steering wheel. That should drop the thresholds down further.

 

Thank you i will give that a shot. I wasn't even sure why techstream showed about 2psi less but regardless Tommorow i will add air in the morning while plugged into techstream.

 

There is going to be some variance between your gauge and the sensors. Just the nature of the beast. Only a gauge calibrated to a standard will tell you something close to accurate.

I don't understand how swapping to Cs will make the TPMS problem to go away.
You plan to run more PSI in the Cs?
