MPG for 3rd Gen Tacomas???

If Im worried about gas, making my house payment, or feeding my kids (which I have none, the world is not ready for my offspring) Im not buying a new truck. Buy a used family vehicle that is half the price.

Mustangs weigh about 1000 lbs less. Shave 1000 pounds off your Tacoma and you'd probably get pretty good gas mileage as well.

I think you would be better off waiting for the 3rd gen Tacoma!

I think Ford is still trying to tweak the MPG. Thats why its not "officially" released yet. Either it's not as good as they thought it would be, and they are trying things to get it better or its really good and they are keeping it secret so the other manufactures will have less time to try and match it.

Some of the articles i have read about ppl test driving it have said in the neighborhood of 22-26 mpg. But they have only driven on a test course. I dont think they have actually test drove on the highway. So my guess is somewhere around 19/25. But i have heard 20/26.

 

It's far more likely it's just they haven't completed EPA certification yet. And further, no mfr's will react in the least to their MPG numbers, whatever they might be (other than through marketing spins). It takes far to much to implement and test design changes and then get them through EPA certification.

And with a twin turbo on that beast you'll get nowhere close to 25mpg pulling 9000lbs of box trailer up a 6% grade at speed, like they did in the endurance test. You'll be lucky to get 10...and maybe 15 on the straight and level. But lucky for Ford, THAT test isn't part of the EPA test sequence for fuel economy!

Not saying it's gonna be bad...I'm positive it will be a great combination. But to get great economy you'll need to stay out of the turbos; it will be really interesting to see what mpg people are getting when they work that truck.

So whats the point of the turbos? I thought they were why it was getting better milage. Or are they the reason for the extra HP and TQ?

 

Turbo chargers get big engine power out of smaller displacement engines, but when you ask for the big engine power and use the turbo's hard you'll have to pay for it just like you would the big engine. Here as everywhere else: there's no free lunches. The turbo's spinning and packing a lot of air into the combustion chamber and the injector's respond by spraying just as hard to keep it stochiometric.

But if you're just mall cruising or hauling a load of ping pong balls and not spinning the turbos so much, you will reap the rewards from that small displacement engine. That's the real beauty of this combination, especially for the suburban truck market.

also the point of the twin-turbo is when you need the power, its there. I've been watching the ecoboost videos on the ford website, and the hauling timber was impressive IMO. I wanted to see the baja truck race but it apparently was pulled.

So there you have it. Just buy the 2011 and say fuck the 2012. I heard that the 2012 tacoma was going to be able to turn into a submarine by the touch of a button.

 

Im not in the market for a new taco. I love mine. Im in the market for a full size. And that ford engine has me real interested. Thanks for the info.

 

And you really expected different? Tacoma's (still) the market leader in mid-size so why would Toyota do anything that cannibalizes their 2011 MY sales with their own 2012 offering?

ESPECIALLY if the 2012 will be markedly different!

I wonder if the Tacoma will go full-size and the Tundra will be positioned in the superduty truck market. I'm not testing out any snorkles at any rate.

I don't think the Baja demonstration would showcase much about the engine. As tough as it may be, Baja is far more a test of suspension and chassis ruggedness than engine. I can not conceive of a stock truck trying to speed through Baja and that would be no test of the engine at all.

 

Just don't expect the 3.5L ecoboost to be their base trucks! Their 3.7L will still hold that honor.

The 3.5L will probably be offered as the premium engine...and at a significant price premium too. Twin turbo, direct injection are really complicated and Ford has obviously spared no expense in making a very rugged design.

In other words: it's expensive so the vehicle needs lots of tack-ons to make it more palatable.

So then one would buy it not because it's fuel efficient...but because it's the torque monster/heavy hauler in the lineup, but happens to be fuel efficient?

This really makes it more interesting to see what it's mpg numbers will be!

 

I just hate marketing and how they know what the 2012 is going to be but won't shed any info until they announce it. I just wish a company would be straight forward.
