For my doublecab, I use milk crates to hold my gear with 1/2" plywood as a platform, cut in half across the width (driver-passenger). They are 11" high. I remove the cooler and water jugs, spread the milk crates out and pull the top sheet of plywood towards the tail gate to sleep on. In Baja, food in cardboard or plastic bags has to go into sealed containers or you'll be sleeping with mice! I'd love to find a HI-Rise Leer/ARE cap but those are few and far in between. Bad pic of the interior, sorry. I use a Kelty 3 legged shade tent thing with two legs over the shell. If it's going to be super windy, I'll use a conduit structure with tarps like you see at swap meets. Or I'll use an easy up if I want more room.

Man oh man, I would trade my setup for one of those "Bel Air" ones in a heartbeat. Just workin' with a custom cap and drawer I built. It works! except the fake wood RV paneling, in Washington, in winter. I tore it all out last night it was so f*cking moldy after only a few nights in there over the past wet months.

You definitely need a lot of fresh air moving to keep the mold/mildew at bay.

Yeah, either I need to move to the Desert or install a little RV Vent with a fan. Any recommendations??

Here’s my trash palace six pac mini need to fix the space above my can and the camper with a light bar or something easy to block some
Wind and then replace wood on the sides with truck bed tool boxes, it just kind of rests on em doesn’t bear full weight. Lives out of it for more than a year now it’s my vacation condo And then I have a Tercel for my around town rig. Buying a snowmobile today so we will see how the towing goes ! I also have a lightweight alu camper for summer time that was a work shell and will be made more into a camper this summer 0B70D4C7-3938-4251-B50B-33ADCB3040AC.jpg F0E5FA8B-829E-4AED-A008-5D56D96B77C7.jpgD3BA4419-B14C-4E66-B204-2E3EEE57C0A3.jpgAD129D55-D56A-4A7B-B374-9A4424C11DF5.jpg

Alas, no real total solution that I've found. It's really a problem of a very small space vs too much moisture from breathing and for you up North, the rain/fog etc. If you've got a powered camper, a Fantastic Fan with various settings and another window to draw air from will be your best bet. That has cost though; cost, space & weight of the solar panels, battery and the noise of the fan itself. There's only so much room in a Tacoma and is spending a grand on panels, batteries, inverter and a fan a good trade off for the weight, lost space and decrease roof rack carrying area? For me it's not. A compressor fridge full of beer is a pretty compelling argument though....

I've used small fans with flexible blades powered by AAA batteries. I used my son's toy hovercraft fan once! (They were more for moving air on warm nights). I mostly live with it as the Leer shell I have is only lined and not insulated. I keep the windows open and stay warm with a better sleeping bag. Even my well ventilated tents, set up in the desert here in socal/baja, drip in the mornings.

Nice critters btw. How do you keep the cat from bailing? My cats, while in/out door at home, I'd thought would bolt for sure. And, could you post a closeup of your drawer slide system? That's this springs project; a drawer to hold cooking/food/gear. I've always been torn between max space usage of a simple drawer vs losing space with slides.

I think I’d be too terrified to take a $165k truck off roading.

Thanks Tan! Yes ive considered some small rv fans, and was planning on powering the camper, just installed a aux panel system and it would be ready for a second battery, but it may be a while.

The critters are another story, the cat (Hoot) was our first critter so we taught him to go everywhere and be fine with everything from 2 months old. He's gone on overnight backpacking trips and done a few 5 mile hikes before finishing on my pack. (our other cat doesn't do good on the road, so he stays home or with family) he's comfortable in the truck, and we set up a little litter box for him in the extra cab at night and he stays in there until he wants snuggles then he paws at the window till we let him in... I could do without the litter box in the cab all roadtrip, but it's better than the alternative! When at camp, we used to tie him up with a littel wire run, but have given him more liberties especially if were alone for miles, and he sticks around. Our newest finding is that the dog won't let him out of her sight, and starts to freak out if she loses him, so thats a help when hes off in the woods!! lol

As far as the drawer goes, I built a box and bolted a bunch of skateboard bearings to it, then have some square steel on the drawer. Here are some pictures, with more cats included.

They did a much better job than I, I'll probably rebuild mine one day with a table saw instead of a skill saw, and thicker wood for the box. But as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it...ill just wait till it see one too many dirt roads!!
