I just took my truck into the dealer for inspection and undercoat recall. The tech that was helping me said I should be doing a drain and fill on the trans every 10k. He said they’ve seen more failures on this trans than any other since he’s been there.....32 years!! I’ll definitely be keeping up on it from now on. The tech even passed along along 3 quarts of tranny fluid so I could get started. Just wanted to pass it along.

This tech works for a dealership... did he tell you to refer him also ...if their was a major transmission issue then toyota would of put out a recall . This guy just wants you to pay for a transmission flush every 10k miles . I think this guy is full of poop .

I think 10k is a bit overkill. But I agree, these trans could use some fresh fluid from time to time.

I ended up doing it, and after 110k miles it was in pretty bad shape

Every 10k seems excessive. As much as people complain about the transmission, it’s proven to be reliable. Not sure I would trust that service tech. lol

What is the service interval on the 6AT anyway? I can’t find it in the manual, so I’m assuming I’m overlooking it.

So you went 110k miles without any issues, and did a drain and fill? I thought the transmissions would go out if driven more than 10k between service. o_O

I believe they recommend every 60k. Not a great idea to go more than 100k. Although I did 158k in my GMC without issues. Not saying the fluid was in great shape though.

10k intervals is insane. If i had AT, i would do it every 30-50k, depending on the usage.

Damn, you waited till 110k. I would never wait that long for an AT fluid change.

Even Fords can go at least 30k before you're buying new parts; Toyota should be at least 20k more than that. I do believe in more frequent trans fluid changes but 10k just sounds a bit anal. Did he also recommend diff changes and cabin air filter?

You could probably take any vehicle in Mass production right now and drive it 30k without changing any fluids and it would be okay.

You're right; they have to last at least one day past the Powertrain warranty running out.

My brothers 16’ transmission went out at 41k then again at 48k. Would stall out and not shift out of 2nd gear. Auto transmission, so I completely believe it. At least on the first couple of years of the Tacoma

Hard top camper...many more to add+
    Toyota Tacoma transmission...is usually 30,000 - 60,000 miles (towing..more often)for Manuel..and 60,000-100,00 mile automatic..
There is a difference between changing /draining trans oil and ..flushing trans and replacing trans oil. To be changing ever 10,000 miles sounds excessive to me..
After watching , “How to replace 3rd gen transmission fluids” .. I think I will let the dealer do it ?

I saw only one video..How to change Tacoma trans fluids ..best to watch a few more for DIY guys..
    Aloha
