TSB-0092-20 is awesome!

Got my 19 TRD Sport flashed yesterday. After 15 months of hating the gear hunting and some occasional throttle lag, just driving it home was a noticeable, major improvement. My dealer, Titus-Will in Tacoma, WA. was happy to update my truck to 92-20. I won't repeat every comment already written hear so let's just say that my truck now drives like it should have when i drove it off the lot many months ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets even better after some local driving to let the "brain" re-learn how i drive. I now look forward to driving it.

Just done my 20, damn! After driving for 3-4 days seems like they finally got it right.

 

Just to echo what many others are saying, I just got my 2019 done at it's 10k service and it drives much better!

 

My truck is a convert. Truck feels good but I never thought it was that bad to begin with. I have only driven a couple short distance trips so far.

 

Makes me wonder what finally motivated Toyota to issue this update. Do you think they began to realize their 3rd Gen Tacoma trucks were getting too big a reputation for being sluggish compared to the midsize truck competition?

 

I think they may have neutered the engine and trans for the best Cafe numbers and maybe realized they went too far. Then later went back and tried to retune a couple of times to stay in parameters. This new tune if you read the TSB they are supposed to put a emissions sticker on the inside of your hood. Which leads me to believe they knew what needed to be done but at the same time needed a ( Pass ) from emissions. This is just a guess.

 

So is this just an improvement for auto trans or would it help a manual trans truck? I really like my truck but the odd throttle and power curve is tough to get used to.

 

Its called “product fade”, same reason we still have drum brakes...I mean really? I bet most of this issue had to do CAFE and EPA numbers but other cars also don’t drive that horrible either. Don’t get me wrong, Toyota has a lot of great merits and a good reputation, but I think we can all agree they rely on their brand a bit much at times also. Toyota seems like the most reluctant manufacture to change their ways.

Honestly the real reason why I bought my truck was a bit for the Toyota name and the fact that this truck absolutely dominates in the aftermarket parts world. I didn’t want to buy a ranger and have almost zero options for lift kits, bumpers and so on. Oh, and the resale on this thing is crazy. But let’s be honest, almost any four door 4x4 truck is an easy thing to sell.

 

I agree with the aftermarket parts world for sure.But some of the other stuff I do not.
Toyota is reluctant to change because usually ( too much change = problems )
The original Toyota truck was a bare bones low powered truck that was extremely good off road and very reliable. The current Tacoma morphed into way more than I ever thought it would be.
The drum brake thing I really don’t have a issue with at all. I’ve owned several Toyota trucks through the years and never had an issue. As a matter of fact I have a brand new set of brakes in the garage from my 2000 Tacoma that I never used. I bought them at the time when the truck had about 120 k miles and just figured they would be bad by then and they still were fine. My truck stops perfectly fine and actually way better the the Chevy Colorado’s we have at work.

 

Just curious, how do I know that the "T-0023-20.cuw" file is for the TSB-0092-20 update? I'm just wondering... I was browsing @tonered ECU TSB Update Post and was like there's no 0092 .cuw file! Just for next time so I can cross reference a TSB to a .cuw file that's all. Glad I found your post @gForceDude

Actually, that Chart appeared after my question/post (perhaps in response to it?); and without that Chart (or without noticing it), that is a very good question to ask.

The kind & thoughtful Folks who put that invaluable thread together did an excellent job; and they continue doing so every day, supporting and helping the rest of to safely navigate through the murky waters of this ECU Update Voodoo stuff.

 

Are you sure you have the current software? My 2020 TRD sport has a 8/20 build date and is listed on the tsb.

 

I had some fuzzy descriptions in text. The chart lays it out much better.

You need to check your ECU ID (Calibration ID) with an OBD2 Scanner to be certain.
You can borrow one from Auto Zone (and some other Auto Parts Stores also), and use it to verify (look under the Vehicle Information menu).

Or, buy your own (a handy tool to have).
