ToyotaCare will cover my “1st” oil change. I’m assuming it will be around 10k once the truck tells me to go in...but I am wondering if I should go get the first done closer to 5k on my own dime for cheap insurance, and the go in for the free 10k and (hopefully) 20k after that.

    IMHO.....10K seems too long.

Perhaps I'm too conservative or old school, but 5k is the interval I have been following for many years.

Synthetic oil is good for 10k, I’ve never had any premature failure from 10k intervals. I’ve been on that program for 6 vehicles now. I’m not a mechanic or oil expert however I am dedicated to maintenance. Eight Toyota’s now, all had oil changes at 10k intervals and never a single engine related problem. You can bring your truck in every 5k for a tire rotation and inspection.

I think the paperwork I was reading said if you drive less frequently and do more short trips instead of highway driving they recommend having the oil changed sooner. But they should do the free change whenever you want I would think. They don't gain or lose anything by changing it for you sooner. From my limited knowledge it was very important to change the oil at a shorter interval the first few times in older engines because the metal parts in the engine were wearing together. But with the newer machining, they can make the parts to much tighter tolerances and it is not as important. I think that is the same reason for being able to use such a light oil in the modern engines.

Toyota will cover your first two oil changes.
The service departments will do them early if that is your desire.
My father-in-law had his first oil change done at the 3,000 mile range after about 14 months from new on his 2019 Tacoma.
At least once a year oil change is suggested.

I rarely drive longer than 15 minutes trips, so I plan to stick with 5k intervals.

    A bit early is fine.

I had my dealer do mine at 4K or so. Then I changed it myself. 10K intervals with Amsoil easy peasy.

Times change. You should keep up.
Everyone who has sent their samples in say 10K is too soon.

Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways, but I do 3500 with full synthetic on all my vehicles. It's $33 or less for a synthetic oil change package from any of the major auto parts stores. It's a small price to pay; and all I know is I've never had a problem with an engine....well, not since I actually started maintaining them. That Plymouth Acclaim I never changed or checked the oil on, took off roading, and maybe forded a river with, was a different story. On the plus side, all the oil I spill in the engine bay keeps the plastic parts looking great.

If you're worried about it. Do an early one then stick to 10k

My thoughts here..Stay with Dealers recommendation...10,000 miles is OK...
I have a contract for 4 years service ..tire rotations ,including oil changes...once a year..or by mileage ..for sooner..

if you have very high mileage...then it is your decision...

Synthetic oils...3 grades ..base on mileage...if oil says good for 7,500 miles grade 3....under 15,000 miles - grade 4..over 15,000 miles up to 20-25 thousand miles grade 5 between oil changes
Amsoil , Red line , and Mobil ..have oils that can last as long as 25,000 miles..use a quality oil filters...
    Read the fine print...
Save your money after that maybe you can change oil as you feel best for your truck...
Engines today are better made/design for better ware and tear...better lubricants today...

Bottom line...it is your decision...! Your choice...each one us will base our thoughts on our past experience’s..
    Aloha,

years ago engines were design to last 100,000 miles..today they say maybe 300,000 miles..? The Tacoma’s ,many are lasting over 200,000 miles..

This guy makes sense. If you listen to those telling you they've had 8 Toyota, and they know what they are talking about, ask them how many miles there 8 Toyota's had.

    I've had an 85 4x4 truck with 590k miles.
    A 91 4Runner with over 400k.
88 Land cruiser with over 250k.
    08 Yaris with over 230k.
06 Scion Xb with over 275.
and my 2020 Tacoma with just over 20k.

    All got oil changed @4~6k.

Only the 85 burned oil,@ about 1 qt per 4k miles.

I do 5k oil changes. No remorse, no regrets here.

What can I say, I just don’t trust engineers who gave us exploding gas tanks (ford Pinto, Chevy pickups) exploding tires (ford vs, Firestone law suit) collapsing buildings and bridges just to mention a few. Need I go on?

That said, it’s your truck your choice and your $$, everyone else or you be dammed lol!

    Good luck with your choice

    Cheers!

Get it done every six months
If you can afford this truck you can afford two oil changes a year
