1st oil change?

My truck maintenance light came on at 4,800 and I had Toyota do the 10,000 mile then. I had them change it again at 9,600 miles and they did it for no charge. All under Toyota care. I personally think every 5k is the ideal, but probably also could be stretched out depending on how many miles per day you drive. For example, my truck is a year and a half old at 9,600 miles so oil changed about every 8 months.

Higher grades oils are designed for longer in between oil changes...they run smoother..than the lower grades..best to do your own research A YouTube video testing oil ,proves not all oil is the same..Amsoil came out the top...

When Mobil oil came out.70’s ..they had 20,000 mile recommend oil change...I was using it..convinced my friend to try in his Volkswagen wagon van...when he started the engine with Mobil...we had to lower the idle a lot , the engine was revering very high...it surprised us...

Some thing to consider , a better grade oil...change “less”often or choose lower grade oil and change “more” often?

Ah the annual 5k vs 10k oil change thread. I vote change at 5k miles.

 

Synthetic oil is good for over 10k easy, the best oil IMO really.

But it's the sludge that's the problem, it's the garbage that's left behind after combustion. there's only one way to deal with garbage, it has to be taken out. Sorry guys, but it always seems to be our job lol!

 

I just watched that video the other day. He definitely does make sense. How he is saying to change the oil is pretty much how I have taken care of all the cars I've owned.
When you get in to the long oil change interval there are things that if you look at the manual that you might find put you in the severe service recommendation catagory. Things like frequent short trips under 10 miles. Towing. Excessive ideling, off road driving and more. That you should change it sooner.
I changed mine yesterday at 4500 miles and about six months. My plan is to change it regularly every 5000- 6000 miles or twice a year. Oil is cheap engines are not and I want it to last 10 years or more.

 

I would highly suggest you use a trickle charger or put it on charger once a month. That'll kill the battery in no time.

 

Still Toyota recommends every 10,000 miles if using synthetic oils (higher grades)..

Spark plugs change at 60,000 miles...

Radiator flush every 30,000 miles

Tranfer case every 80,000-90,000miles

Transmission oil replace at 60,000-100,000 miles

Owner replace every 200,000 miles? Um..(recommended)

ReadToyota’s service bulletins..how many things need tighten down,inspected,,etc..

2002 Exterra ..it had 100,000 miles design spark plugs..rear plug was hard to reach too..

How often do you really need to change oil? You can’t teach old dog new tricks....how often to change oil will always be your choice and beliefs.. even if recommended say otherwise..

Belief is the key word here. Do what u think is necessary; either based on science and analysis, or anecdote, but trying to convince stubborn ones otherwise is a fools errand. Live in your bubble knowing your engine is healthy, or you saved money or whatever bubble you're in, just quit trying to prove everyone wrong people!

 

I used to do 2 oil changes a year regardless of mileage the first 9 years of my truck’s life, but now I’ve moved to 1 oil change a year the past 2 years. I’ve used Mobil 1 since I started doing my own oil changes, and 95% of my trips are short 15-20 minutes. I’ve come to realize that more frequent oil changed are a waste and the only thing it does is make my wallet lighter.

Lots of car manufacturers have moved to once per year oil changes.

 

Changed it myself at 6500 for one reason. It was black! I’ll let Toyota do the next two but I’m really surprised with the color. My 03 Tundra got Castrol synth every 10k and it was a nice caramel color. WTF?

 

My maintenance light came on at 4500 miles...The dealer didn't even want to do an oil change at that mileage...i got them to finally replace the oil, but they wouldn't change the filter till 10k miles. Well its now scheduled to go back in in feb for its 2nd maintenance of 1 year around 7k miles. Hopefully they do both the oil, and filter, but i'm not holding my breath.

 

I have been using synthetic in a number of vehicles over the years and have always been told that 7k is good point to change the oil and filter. I have a little over 3k on my 2020 and have a ways to go - however, there is thought kicking around that the first oil change should be sooner than 7k.

 

I used only mobil 1 synthetic in my 2001 tundra and changed it at every 20k miles or so. Truck engine still ran perfect at nearly 300k when i sold it. Have no doubts about using synthetics lasting well at 10k miles.

 

One oil change a year for my vehicles using synthetic oil. My wife and I don't drive much so all of them are <7k per year.

My belief about changing oil is that it's cheap maintenance. If the manufacturer interval is 10k miles and you want to change the oil once every 3 to 5k, then do it.

The only person I give a hard time to is my dad who changes his oil every 3k miles. Why? It's fun to give him a little shit from time to time. He's also retired and I think he likes to change the oil in his cars.

 

People here get emotional about oil change intervals. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I change every 5k miles. It's my money and my truck.

 

the first oil change is the most important, in my opinion. i run the first oil change early 2500-3000 max. my thought is, get all the early wear break in crap from the motor out of there asap. then every 6-7500 after. i use mobil1 and oem filters. wally world has 5 quart jugs for less than 30 bux. it is cheap insurance. could i go longer? sure but, if i stick to the 7500 or so, i can rotate the tires at the same time, and not have to do that in the middle of a service cycle. just easier to do it all at once. as stated, your truck, your time, your money. do what you like. I'll agree 3-5k miles if non-synthetic oil changes, but i'm convinced your just throwing away money, and wasting resources if synthetic oil used at those same intervals.

 

In the past I've removed valve covers and seen the gunk that can build up on under there using the ole standard motor oil and it me made conscious of regular oil changes per manufacturer recommendations at the very least as I wasn't doing so in my early years. I have a vehicle that had it's oil(conventional) changed every 3k and found that it still had gunk build up although much less than in vehicles that was not oil changed regularly. I learned something from that, actual hands on experience to see the difference. In the early 70's we started to hear of Amzoil but it was so costly back in the day, lol, most never trusted the 10k claim.

Anyone with actual experience using Synthetics under manufacturers recommended interval changes for it's lifetime, taken the engine apart or at least the valve covers and observed any build up of gunk? I read/hear manufacturers synthetic claims but It's hard to believe not having actual hands on experience using it myself. I understand/believe the Syn wear/tear advantages but the conventional oil did it's job too with manufacturers recommendations. I tend to believe gunk will build up as oil heats up collect debris, lingers on the metal parts where it's not emmersed fully overnight and start to gunk up. I ask because I've had a Euro car manufacturer recommended 10k or year synthetic oil change whichever comes 1st. So I'm thinking syn oil degrade over time

My question would be the Gunk build up or lack of at 10k mile change intervals over the engines lifetime or at least over 150k miles?
