This was last month on a BMW...you’d be surprised what people don’t notice...

Sometimes funky noises and warning lights aren’t enough...

    Agree wity that guy.

I do mine every 5k. I live in a metropolitam area and sit in traffic at times, also im not easy on my truck by any means. I go offroad quite a bit as well, mostly in summer.

At 5k my oil is pitch black and stinks like gas. 10k oil changes? No thank you. Im planning to keep my truck for 10-15 years.

I told the guy “I’ve only seen pictures like this on the internet, I’ve waited 15 years to see one in person”. He didn’t get it. He was almost as confused when I said he needed brakes. Mind you, he brought the car in for a check engine light and it was running on 4 out of 6 cylinders. lol

I can only comment with vehicles run with conventional oil with 3-4k miles oil changes that appeared black, not the amber color oil when new. Same engines using mobil1 synthetic with twice that many miles between changes still looked good enough to run in your lawnmower. Could recall my tundra due for that 20k mile oil change didn't look bad at all.

Pic above is of a brake rotor. I tow a boat in the summer and do a lot of in town driving, about 5K per year total. Our climate is not overly hot or overly cold. Truck is garaged every night so its not out in the elements. 5K for me, no time interval. My second gen I did every 3k, I decided thats too often is why I switched to 5K. Use Mobil 1 full synthetic and have had for years in all my rigs. By the way, my dealer WILL NOT do the free oil change at 5K, they will only do it at 10K. I never use the dealer, but my co worker does, and they will not deviate from the 10K free oil and filter change. He stood in the service dept and argued until he was blue in the face, but they wouldnt budge, 10K only for service.

Typical! Classic garage "upsale"... why would he need brakes, if the car can hardly move, to begin with?

Check your oil on the dipstick regularly, if it's not black or low, you can keep going til the 10k mark no problem

If you are worried about it, go ahead and get it changed at 5k, then switch to 10k intervals so long as synthetic is used.

About 15 years ago I was working as a pizza driver. I was the only person there who went to school for auto mechanics. One of the drivers asked me "how long can he drive when the brakes start grinding" I told him he should probably get it taken car of within a few days.... well 2 days later he called in because his wheel locked up. Turns out the brakes had been grinding for 3 months already and he wore through the brake pads till they were gone.. his caliper piston went through the rotor and locked up the wheels. Ended up costing him $1700 for new pads, rotors, calipers and a tow.

He’s an engineer at a local tech company. Probably a great dude at work and gets along great with his team but poor guy just doesn’t my humor or how he could have gotten into an accident. It needed a caliper and the brakes felt horrible too. I wasn’t trying to go down a total rabbit hole and hijack the thread but man, the REAL reason the check engine light even concerned him was he needed smog to register the car.

I get all kinds of fun stuff in...

If that's a disc it's nothing like I've ever seen before, and I've done quite a few brake jobs in my lifetime. That design looks like it would chew through pads!

And thank you for proving my point, hence the reason I don’t trust engineers, or politicians uh, and lawyers too. Ah what the heck, I trust doctors the least and actually like engineers like you the most because at the end of the day money is at the root of all evil so it’s best to take all the claims with a grain of salt. I have deal with many, good bad and ugly engineers and the bad ones don’t get flushed out until after the damage is done.

Getting back to oil changes, and why don’t I change my oil every 100 miles?

Now who is choosing what facts to believe lol!

As an engineer you must know that just about everything in this world revolves around “tolerances”. How much can someone tolerate alcohol, drugs, medicine, water, loneliness, space and it goes on forever.
So if we can agree that tolerances revolve all around us and that a chimney can tolerate a certain amount of combustion byproducts such as creosote before we ought to clean it out to have a clean safe home to be warm in, then our vehicle can also tolerate a certain amount of combustion that we can live with or tolerate before we decide to clean it out.

The engineers before you have for years given us tolerances of around 3-5k maximum intervals until better more expensive oils drove up the price of 1st year cost of vehicle ownership to a more competitive price levels.
This in turn put pressure on engineers to “nudge” this tolerance up to keep cost down and brand sales up.
But the harmful combustion byproducts still accumulate at about the same rate as before, and I’ll stick to the days before tolerance were “nudged” up to accommodate the all mighty dollar 1st year cost of ownership industry competition.

And finally, I do appreciate the engineers and amazing things they invent to kill us and make us more dependent on them.
However, at the end of the day, we can all live without engineers, lawyers and doctors too, we just have to sacrifice bad food for the latter though yuk!

But I’ll keep my plumbers tough to flush bad inventions down to John

    Cheers!

Looking at the rotor more closely and giving it more thought, did the rotor wear down past the air vent holes? If this is the case, then wow, never seen this before!

I've done that kind of work in the past too. It is very hard on vehicles overall. Of the few things my dad and grandfather taught me was regular maintenance on your car. The other drivers were so clueless. One girl who move form NJ didn't even know how to put in the gas.
I was always looking at others cars. Even when I was a manager there I was usually the one who had the most auto knowledge
