Sorry for another suspension post / OME post. I know there are tons, I’ve searched and read most of them before posting this. I also posted this in the Suspension section under the OME Questions/Answers/Pictures thread but didn’t get much traction. The problem with some of these threads is this suspension is the same components but works differently between 2nd to 3rd gen Tacoma’s. Here goes:

    Vehicle:
2017 DCSB with 70k miles on 265/75/16 and SummoSprings in the rear, otherwise stock.

    Weight:
I have MobTown Slider’s on, basically since the truck was new (Spring 2017).
I have RSi SmartCap on order

    Goal:
2” lift front/rear, maintaining factory rake

    Considerations:
With the sliders weighing 180’ish lbs (if I recall correctly), and the SummoSprings in the rear, the weight of the sliders had more of an impact on the front than the rear. With the cap coming I want to correct this and be balanced for the weight. No long term goals of adding bumpers/skids. 100lbs in the bed at any given time, outside of the cap to come (so 300lb estimated constant bed load).

Current Measurements (Taken from wheel hub to fender):
    Front Driver: 20”
    Front Passenger: 20 3/8”
    Rear Driver: 22”
    Rear Passenger: 21 1/2”

    Concerns:
I just want to be balanced for weight with sliders and cap, front to rear and side to side with a similar ride to what I have now (if it was a little firmer, fine.... if it was a little softer, fine).

Looking at the OME kit from Wheelers: Was thinking 886 with 90021 (Soft) and 95’s (Medium duty) leafs in the rear. The kit comes with the trim packer so that should cover the front driver prob and balance out the front.

Any thoughts / concerns on this? I’ve searched TW and thumbed through a ton of material. Most applications people post about are either stock, or heavy load outs and I feel like I’m somewhere in the middle.

I was afraid the 886’s would be too firm or jarring. I was afraid the 888’s would be too tall and I’d lose the rake (also reading concerns of sag over time). No offense to those that like the level look, but I REALLY want that rake.

I’ve had this in my cart for a week just going back and forth between 886/888, I want a 1 and done for the front. If I wasn’t happy w/ the rear I can easily swap leafs around to get what I’m looking for, but with the fronts coming assembled from the shop I want to get it right the first time.

Help sway me one direction or the other.

    TYIA

If anyone has pictures of a comparable setup, please post or link me the post

Ordered 886 with 90021’s (Soft valved) and 95’s (medium) leafs for the back.

Id start with the heavy dakars. I run them with an alucab canopy and sliders and theyre not too harsh but allow me to fill the truck with camping gear and be fine. The mediums sagged quick and I was bottoming out with just the canopy.

I probably would have went with the 888s and then a small spacer if needed. I'm on 887s with a small headstrong spacer. The 886 is designed for a bumper and winch.

    Designed fo
Designed for bumper and winch, but that was based on lighter front end 2nd gens from posts I found. Based on that I went with the 886’s.

There was so little information about it or user experiences posted, but the few I did find with 886s had no regrets. I read to many posts of 888 sag.

I will def post follow ups based on my experience.

I figured if the rear was an issue I could add a leaf to make it a heavy pack.

    Thank you for the feedback!

Do. Not. Get. OME 888s. Do not get them. They WILL sag. They are not meant for the 3rd gen without weight, and absolutely they are not meant for the 3rd gen with weight. You will regret it.

    That’s good to know!
When I ran across this thread it hit close to home for me and my current situation.
I picked up a used set of 5100’s with 888’s for a great price the other day but haven’t installed them yet. I was contemplating swapping in different springs as I really only wanted a 1-1.5” lift. I do have sliders on now and a mobtown front skid I’m about to install in the next few days so I’ll have a little weight but not enough to merit anything super stiff. I still need to get my rear shocks, but I have a set of tuff country add-a-leafs that should give me about 1.5” in the rear and hopefully keep my factory rake. I think I may wait a little while to just see how stock setup does with this weight before making a decision.
I’m going to keep reading up and thanks for everyone’s experience, knowledge and insight!

Kit arrives Tuesday, based on my work schedule and how early that day it arrives I may have it done this week.

I will post updates, pictures, and observations.

Okay, I was reluctant to post an update until it’s complete, but here goes. I installed the front coils today, again - 886’s with 90021’s (soft valved). I’m hoping to get the rear 95’s (medium) Dakars on tomorrow morning and then get an alignment scheduled.

The install was super easy, as simple as the Low Range Off Road Part 1 video makes it look. I ordered them assembled.

3” of lift on the front, despite the trim packer on the driver’s side both sides got 3”.

    Before:
    Front Driver: 20”
    Front Passenger: 20 3/8”

    After:
    Front Driver: 23”
Front Passenger: 23 3/8” - 23 1/2”. (Visibly I don’t notice this, or any lean, but it’s measuring out this way).

After I dumped it off the jack stands it was way over 3”, but I backed it out of the driveway, jumped up and down on the sliders all around and took it for a loop around the block getting up to about 50-55mph. Hit a few stop signs, looped through a round about and headed back home. After getting back to the driveway I measured it at the measurements posted above. Not thrilled with the amount of lift, I did want a little less in the 2-2.5” range.

    Drivability:
Impressed. At first I noticed little bumps but once I got it moving and maybe the shocks got exercised it feels not much different than stock. Tracked straight, no vibrations. I must have got pretty close w/ the alignment cams, I expected it to pull and be all over the road but it was solid.

My only concern at this point is that the rear isn’t going to raise enough to get the rake / balance I’m looking for. I will wait until I get them on and the cap and see how it sits and drives before making any changes and at this point any changes I do make would go to the rear via block or additional leaf.

Based on this very minimal input immediately after install, I would say anyone that is looking at the 888’s based on wanting that additional lift, get the 886’s.

Very cool, fun to see pics of a tacoma with only the front lifted!
Looking forward to seeing what lifting the back will do to the height in the front...

    Done.

The rear leafs were more difficult than the front coils. Mainly because I did this job solo and trying to adjust the body off the axel enough to work and getting the new, much heavier, leafs in and lined up with a pain. Most difficult for me was the front leaf bolt..... and oddly enough, getting the shocks to line up in the lower mount.

All-in-all I’m happy with it, I did want more rake but I’m going to give this a month before I make any adjustments. Alignment is scheduled for tomorrow. I drove it around maybe 20-30 miles at various speeds to see if there was any vibrations. I do have a minor “shutter” in the 20-30 mph range and slow speed braking, searching on TW says that’s the shim kit on the carrier bearing, should be a little thicker and I’ll add some washers in there to compensate. I put it in 4H so I know the ECGS bearing won’t solve that problem, but am ordering that now and will install at a later time.

Previous Measurements (Taken from wheel hub to fender):
    Front Driver: 20”
    Front Passenger: 20 3/8”
    Rear Driver: 22”
    Rear Passenger: 21 1/2”

    New Measurements:
    Front Driver: 23”
    Front Passenger: 23 1/2”
    Rear Driver: 23”
    Rear Passenger: 23.5”

Easily an even 3” in the front and 2” in the rear.

If anyone is looking to level their 3rd Gen I would highly recommend the 886 coils.

    Drivability:
I do notice them, they are firmer. That being said, I think the best way I can describe them is when I put 50 PSI in a set of KO2’s I had previously. Everybody has a different tolerance and perception, to me it’s not significant, and minus the lack of rake in the front I would do it again.

I won’t make any changes until I have a cap on the back (RSi SmartCap on order) but I wonder if I’d be better suited to block the rear or add a leaf?

If anyone has specific questions on the install or end result, feel free to post here or DM me. I will update this thread if there are any changes or additional thoughts. For the record, stock UCAs and no brake line extensions.

I updated the gallery with additional pictures that show some progress of the leaf install and final product: https://imgur.com/a/ZKfezeA

Alignment was good to go. Attaching numbers for reference if anyone is curious.

@minium I have 886s but paired with the headstrong 3 leaf AAL. When I had my ARE canopy I had reverse rake. I added a 1” lift block in the rear and now I have approximately 1/2” positive rake. I’ve since moved on to an RSi and it’s maintained the same rake. Hope that helps some.

Thank you, that does help. Your post regarding your RSi cap was paramount in me getting one on order for myself so thank you for that also.
