    Just picked up an swr meter at radio shack. Hope this cures my problem. Its acting all weird and shit.
    I know the cb is grounded good because I ran both the power and ground cables directly to the battery. My antenna is mounted directly on top of my alumuminum toolbox. But the sound is really, really low.
    when I unhook the coax at the antenna and just leave the very tip of it in, then I hear static and its very audible. Screw the coax in and it goes silent again.
    I don't know how to use the meter so I guess I will search the nets.

    Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
    does it have a tuneable tip on it?

    also, the swr meter should go between the coax and the cb. the directions should tell you how to use it properly. it's not hard once you know.

    Not sure. I think so. On the package it said "cut to tune". Also what I have been reading on the internatz if it needs lengthened I have to cut down to the coil and pull it out.

    I'm going to mount it to the siderail of the bed because right now it catches the top of my garage door.(damn 881's).

    The directions are pretty strait forward, I just need a solid, SOLID ground for the antenna. Drive out to an open field, do my calibration, set it to chnl 20 and make sure the mic is the same distance from the cb at all times. And try and get it under 2.0, correct?

    The mount I have is aluminum. I wondered at first if that was the problem. The guy at radio shack (an older fella that seemed to know quite a bit) said it didnt matter however I still plan on running a ground wire from a bolt on the mount to the fram.

    I've never heard of a "cut to tune" before. both of the ones i've had were twist tips. I think that 1.1:1 is optimal. RTFM :D

    that's fine.

    right, as long as you are making that frame connection. proper grounding will make a big difference.

    1.1:1 is great for a single ch. under 2.0 a great for 1-40 ch's
    The fiberglass firestick if being to long should be cut at 1/4 in increments until desired freq tune is achieved.....or pitched in the fawking trash if cut to short.
    Heck, I dont know. I'll work on it in the morning. Trying to get my ghetto box fan mounted on the ceiling of the garage to push some of that warm air down off a 12 ft ceiling. and i'm out of beer and tired. pfft.
