We have this feature on our 2020 Highlander limited. While it may be a "cool" feature, it's pretty much useless. What, am I going to start the engine with my remote (remote's good for what 30 feet, 50 tops) and then stand around outside my vehicle while it warms up or cools down? F' that, I'll just plop my ass down and drive away like the old days while everyone else waits around for the heat or AC.

I guess if you don't have a garage and can park close to your front door, it MIGHT come in useful on occasion.

Sooooooo, did anyone figure out EXACTLY what requirements must be met in order to know if you should have this or not? Trim level? Connected services app? Etc.

I have the N2Designs remote start on mine that I just installed, but I’m curious if I should have had remote start already.

Nevermind. I figured it out. For anyone curious, attached is the chart showing which trim levels it is standard on and which it is option.

Works on mine, but my dealer told me 'he threw it in for free'. Now that sounds like he was bullshitting me to make himself look good

My 2020 DCLB AT TRD Sport with push button start has it. I purchased my truck one month ago.

How did I first learn about this? My Toyota salesman showed me.

I can remote start my truck 2 ways. One through my Toyota app, second with the key FOB.

The app is most convenient as I don’t have a clear line to my truck to use the FOB. My truck sits in an underground concrete parking lot.

In Canada, I don’t have the tech package. The Sport comes pre configured in Canada. We can’t add packages like you can in the States. All we can add is dealer installed options.

Does anyone know if remote start continues to work with the key fob after the remote connect subscription expires? I have no plans to pay $80/year for the subscription, but was curious if I will lose the ability to start with the fob.

Skip to the next paragraph to get to the answer about remote start or continue with this paragraph if you want some background. I purchased my 2020 Tacoma Off-Road in March. While at the dealership the salesman walked me through setting up Remote Connect and showed me how to use the app or key fob for remote start. It worked with both the app and the key fob. When I got home I began looking at what I had signed up for. I read that with Remote Connection the truck is always sending my location to Toyota as well as how fast I accelerate, how fast I brake and other vehicle telemetry information. I'm not a "got to wear a tin foil hat to stay safe" type of person, but all I wanted was a Tacoma. I didn't want to be tracked 24x7 so I disabled the Remote Connection service by pressing the SOS button and told the representative to disenroll me from this service. As soon as I did this my Remote Start no longer worked with the app, which is understandable, but it also no longer worked with my key fob. I contacted Toyota and they said the Remote Connection was needed to "provide a better automotive experience" for me. They also said that you must have the Remote Connection service for remote start to work via the App or via the key fob. I thought it was disgusting that Toyota disabled this capability that has worked on vehicles going back to about 1985. This is a local feature that uses RF to communicate between the key fob and the truck. I was not happy that they disabled this to try and get you to pay for a annual Remote Connection subscription. Driving the Tacoma one more time made me forget all about this since this is by far the best truck I've ever owned.

Now to your question, does remote start continue to work with the key fob after the remote connect subscription expires. My answer is YES. It didn't work for me back in March after I cancelled Remote Connection. However, I tried this again today and it now works. Seems to me Toyota may have had enough complaints they decided to re-enable this feature. Thank you Toyota.

My remote connect expired last month, even though I had received an email stating it had been extended for another month, and I have been unable to remote start with the fob since then.

I can confirm that once your Remote Connection service expires the key fob also stops working.. Found this out this morning at 20 degree weather after heavy rain last night and my truck was just one big ice cube... the key fob would not work when it did the day before. Got home tonight and reactivated the Remote Connection service and key fob works again. I have no earthly explanation why Toyota would tie their key fob into the Remote service, well other then money, but they have.

You can also your Alexa or Google voice assistant to start the truck after skill/linking accounts.. I say, Alexa tell Toyota to start my tacoma, then my pin number. It's great, I'm still on the year free trial.

It terrible if you loose the fob autostart if you don't pay the remote services fee.

Well that explains it. I bought my 2020 truck 12/31/2019 so my 1 year trial ended 2 weeks ago and since January my FOB no longer works. That sucks
