Supposedly a V1 upgrade kit is in the works.. not sure if I can justify it.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
    :spending:
Sure you can, it’s just money use it when you need it!

Did some mods for the GFC. Ordered a Duluth seat back bunker for some better organization of stuff we always take camping. With the new orientation of my spare tire to utilize the organizer I had to remove the fridge handles to fit it where I want. Swapped them out for some straps made out of maxtrax straps I had laying around and it works great. Wish I would have bought this a lot sooner. Should drop us down to bringing only one Plano box for dry goods and kitchen stuff.

Also swapped out the factory foam cushions for my Exped megamat. Drilled some 1” holes into the two squares that are normally inside a mattress cover. Requires a little more breakdown time by having to fold over and compress the mattress for about 30 seconds. Otherwise the mattress will push out the tent material when you’re trying to close it. But imo it’s worth it for a comfortable nights sleep!

You spent longer trying to find one to see in person than you did with it on your truck before you decided you needed something new

You are right I did spend a lot of time trying to get eyes on one before I pulled the trigger. That being said I did buy one. For me it’s not about having the newest and greatest thing. It’s the few pet peeves I had about the camper I didn’t like. Overall it’s a great camper. There were a few things that it was missing in my opinion to make it the perfect camper for me. Few of the key things to it was lacking. You can’t lock and unlock it while inside. The panels don’t remove as easy as they do with V2. The struts being moved to the inside the frame. And the most important thing is the 20% weight difference. All that was solved with V2. Plus I took delivery of mine during the middle of a pandemic not the boot in the middle of winter. I don’t live in CA anymore and winters here are pretty damn cold. Where I live we are limited on where we can go off roading and camping at. I have to travel 2 to 3 hours state to state to do any halfway decent off roading and camping. Plus there are major travel bands in place right now because of the pandemic. And I work 50 to 60 hours a week. So I suppose you’re right I’m not in the Overlanding life nor did I claim to be. I like to go off roading and spend time in the woods with my friends hiking and camping. My use for this isn’t for overlanding or to live out of all year long. It’s camping and traveling in the spring, summer and fall. If all my reservations about the GFC were solved with V2 why keep the V1. There are other people that want a V1 and I can get what fulfills what I believe will make it a perfect camper instead of an almost perfect camper. Not to boot I spent almost $9000 on this thing so I wanted to be perfect for my needs.

I'm placing an order for a build tonight. Figure I've got 5 months to figure out the venting solution for dogs in back while underway.

Just spit-balling here, but has anyone considered a 4" or so flexible rubber conduit between the cab and the bed? Thinking you could bolt a 6" x 6" square removable panel over the conduit at both sides to have the ability to close it off when not in use. Be a way to pipe in some climate control to the bed area.

I'm not concerned about venting for camping, only while underway with dogs in the back, now that the "dog hack" pop the rear panel is not recommended.

Other option is just maybe a couple 6" louvered venting panels in the upper edges of the front panel, catch some air coming in from the overhang.

Open to suggestions. Would rather cut a whole in the aluminum panel (removable/replaceable) than the top.

I sent these ideas and a picture of the GFC to my engineer buddy as well. Will post back if he comes up with anything I haven't read on here yet.

Edit: open to inputs. Maybe the mountain west living folks can chime in. GFC seems to say the insulated top should keep temps down...maybe vents aren't needed on a colorado truck?

Edit again: engineer buddy got back to me. Look into a NACA duct (used on aircraft/boats) for an air intake (install it externally to deflect rain) Mount 1 on each upper front of side panel, angle it 45 deg down so water/rain doesn't pull in and its high enough to not pull in dust.

GFC hasn't addressed the old method for venting for "dogs" but with the new embassy hinges being so much stronger and robust than the living hinge I can't see it being a failure point anymore. In regards to setting an always open vent to avoid dust intrusion I think that is a losing battle. At lower speeds on dusty trails I'd put my money on dust still getting through. At higher speeds I don't see an issue but in 10ish mph rough terrain speeds I feel like dust would still float up and through.

Those things move a LOT of air - meant to be a high volume air intake, typically for cooling, and not upset the airflow around the duct. Turning at 45° to the direction of flow might cause whistling/hums... so be wary. Either way, at 60mph, whatever is in the air will get funneled right in to your camper with the force of a shopvac exhaust! SO if you're trying to change out hot air to avoid heat stroke, would do that effectively, i'd say! If you just want air changeout to avoid suffocation, this is probably overkill. You'd be surprised how little ventilation is necessary for that.

Either way, here's a cute naca duct you can close:

know anybody with a 3d printer and some cad skills? Oh wait. That's me! ;)

Hey so I finally put a deposit down on a GFC and now I'm wondering about my suspension situation. I'm still on the stock OR bilsteins from 2016, and I've added SOS sliders and rear bumper. I'm guessing that I'm going to want a little bit more support once I get the GFC but I'm not planning on any crazy buildout that would add a ton of weight beyond the GFC. I don't want to add much of a lift, if any... Can I get away with just an AAL? Anyone have suggestions or similar situations? Thanks!

I think an AAL is a bandaid. I would highly suggest getting a full leaf pack. Maybe Icon or OME Dakar

backing up @fatfurious2 a full pack i also think is better, but i'd throw in deaver expedition stage II or III depending on exactly where your truck is at (do you have a swingout on the bumper etc etc) after my OME HD dakars i am fully impressed with the deavers (i have stage III)
