What I have learned so far on my rather short life is never give the LEO’s probable cause. If you know the law even if it’s a stupid one in your opinion, why chance it?
Personally I would be looking into actual bed lights. They are awesome and use them all the time.

Not sure about Minnesota, but one gives a F about it in Texas. People have light bars on light bars on light bars. It's like an episode of Pimp My Ride, southern edition. But, grabbing a couple of 5 dollar black covers off Amazon can't hurt if you're worried.

In CA I occasionally get pulled over when driving 3-5 mph over the speed limit by those damn Highway Meter Maids, but rarely get a ticket. They just come up to my window all excited and nervous and then let me go. Those pullovers are always in the BMWs I have owned. In my Tacoma I can drive 10+ and those overpaid meter maids don’t even bat an eyelash.

I’ve been all over the country with mine uncovered and never had an issue. Up in northern Minnesota the logging trucks run light bars on top of the cab at night all the time

No one cares here either... at least they dont in the south suburb areas. Ive had giant ass aux lights on many cars and trucks for the past 15 years and the only light I ever got hassled for was a yellow neon tube behind my grill while in a parking lot playing with bouncy balls with a buddy of mine.

I have lived in rural SC now for a year and a half. I come from 56 years of living on top of a mountain in rural WV. Not a lot of rules but the people are responsible and take care of themselves. I don't even see a police car for weeks at a time lol.

In my experience they can always find a reason to stop you if they want to stop you. Not giving them a reason is less chance of you getting stopped.

    That’s a damn fact.

I just don’t want to be the low hanging fruit...

I stop and chat with LEOs now and again, maybe get a few coffees and just say thanks. I don’t have the patience for public service.

I've heard "oh you looked like you took that corner a little fast" (I hadn't), "wasn't sure if you used a signal" (I had), and numerous others. Nothing I can do to prevent those kinds of statements but as you said I can try my best to minimize

That’s awfully nice of you. I’d rather pay a fine than have a conversation with most of them.

Given those 2 choices, I'd have the conversation. They don't need my money nor am I willing to give it

You got it. But driving from Loveland to Denver on the daily was equally as bad.. a lot cheaper but... The worst (undeserving) ticket I got was in Greeley CO. I got a ticket for being the sober driver for a bunch of my drunk coworkers from a company party. I was 19 and found guilty for being underage and in the presence of alcohol. I had to spend a day in a court ordered class, that was supposed to teach me how bad alcohol is...... It didn't work.

I had the same thing happen. Busted at an underage drinking party and I was the DD. Everyone in the house got a ticket and when my parents called to question why I got it when I was being responsible, they were told being at an underage party is illegal. I may as well have just been drinking. Everyone was underage, so I guess that made a difference.

For the OP, I would just get some covers and keep them in the truck. Then if you did get pulled over you could say you forgot to put them on and make them happy.

Diversion programs used as bargaining chips has never worked. Courts saturate mandated classes for rehabilitating purposes but recovery doesn’t stem well when you’re there on the courts behalf. Speaking from personal experience.

VA will pull you for any uncovered after market light. I've been pulled for light bars and after-market fog lights on a bumper. They also love stopping you to check tint.

I’m a little shocked at that outcome. Most officers would understand that having a sober driver is the greater of two evils.

The thing is I fill the bed completely up with tools and I want the light shinning down so I can see what I'm digging through in my tool box. Plus it's cold as hell right now and I don't want to be fishing wire under the truck. So I took my roof rack off so I can work on it inside. When it warms up I will wire some lights into the bed too.

This is so messed up. You just being where other people were breaking the law made you also immediately guilty of breaking the law?? so frickin stupid.
