Are more expensive brands such as cvt say vs a smittybuilt overlander gen 2 worth the extra premium or are you paying for the name brand? What tents are you guys running and how have they held up?

This review is a bit older but seems pretty good:
    https://expeditionportal.com/above-the-fray-soft-shell-roof-tents/

Thought that might help as a place to start. Lots of good folks here have all kinds of tents and can weigh in with real world experiences.

Fuck that noise. $1k for a tent? I’d pop for a teardrop trailer or a pop up.

I had a tepui, and two of my close buddies I did a lot of camping with had a CVT and a smittybuilt. They all leaked without the rain fly (even in mild-ish rain, so no difference there) they all were EXACTLY the same style with the differences being the materials. We all had plenty of weird small issues, but the major differences between CVT/tepui and smittybuilt were,
SB had slightly lighter and arguable slightly lower quality fabric
SB has a weird and super shitty ladder design that can be annoying
SB has a Velcro on cover where my tepui was zipper on (worth noting my zipper broke off and I had to tape the tent closed but tepui did warranty it)
All three flare up quite a lot while driving on hwy. my best advice is look into hard shell tents, that new GFC super light looks promising. The clamshell soft shells kinda suck to close especially when it gets wet.

I’d go with a wedge or hardshell RTT instead. iKamper is one that comes to mind.

Supposedly the smittybuilt gen two is supposed to be an upgrade over the gen 1 but seeing how I’ve never owned one I couldn’t say

Probably wouldn’t be prosperous to ship. I’d sell for $200 but probably another $200 to ship.

Y’all need to stay out of TX. It’d be one thing if y’all wanted to be Texans and leave Cali behind but most want to bring that shit here.
