Snorkle suggestions

ARB originally had a slimmer one for our trucks but said they had to add volume to meet the flow needs of the larger displacement higher reving petrol engines vs the lower reving hilux and cruiser diesels and also to improve throttle response.

Could be hog wash and just up sizing for appearances and marketing within the U.S.since "bigger is better" here but I digress.

 

Is this snorkel for air flow. No matter how high you raise intakes your computer will be fried. Not sure how deep you plan on taking it but I’ve been in 3’ for about 10 miles without problems. Stock intake

 

Is there any benefit to a snorkle? Are you guys also waterproofing all the electrical and putting a cut off switch on the radiator fan so the trucks can go in deep water? Oh wait, I was forgetting you would need to redo the exhaust.

 

Snorkel is really for dessert racing type stuff, but somehow has become a deep water thing. Maybe the name suggests such a thing but there is way more involved than just a snorkel

 

That's what I was wondering. Water as high as you went gets water in the rear differential from reading other posts. I was thinking the snorkle looks cool, but the limited off roading I do I could see that thing easily getting stuck on a branch and yanked off just on the farm.

 

Differentials are an easy fix, it’s really the electrical shit that’s the problem

 

I saw it advertised for driving in dusty areas, you are right. But I was thinking, if there is that much dust being kicked up that it would bother the regular air intake, I would think moving it up a few feet would not help much if you are driving in dust clouds.

 

Lots of people misread the snorkel as being a water crossing tool where in actually it’s for desert racing with the intake backwards so it doesn’t suck sand. I had one on my Jeep for cool points.

 

Yep, it supposed to go backwards. Not as a scoop.

 

Ask the guys who hydro-locked their engines if they wish they had a snorkel, snorkels do come in handy, you can't predict every water crossing.
If you google hydro-locked tacoma you get more results than "I fried my electronics cause I went deep".

 

Not saying it wouldn’t help but there is way more to it than just installing a snorkel

 

so for a real serious question.......How do they hold up in a car wash?

 

I’d bet there are more hydrolocked snorkels than not, false sense of security.

Snorkel for water crossing is a common misconception.

A SNORKEL IS NOT FOR WATER.

Sure it may help but that's not it's primary purpose, you need many supporting mods to make your truck "water proof".

It's actually for cleaner air, the scoop after all is a pre cleaner and the snorkel itself moves the intake path out of the wheel well and theoretically higher above the heavier dust and debris left behind by the vehicles in front of you, also

When I went to 34" tires I had to completely remove my splash guards meaning any mud, pebbles, sand, and even a fish once, that my tire kicked up would end up in my air intake box and I got tired of having to buy a brand new filter every time I went off road.

 

Get the ARB, I absolutely hated my dobinsons snorkel on my last truck. Fitment was absolute crap.

 

HAHAHA! I've never gotten the front exhaust thing but I get the "MANnnnnnn That thing go UNDER WATER!?!?!" pretty frequently. I used to think it was cheesy for people to ask that but I get it. And honestly that's part of the fun of ownership. I did get a small boost in mpg's as well...especially on I-95.

 

3 times now, most recently just last week. It amazes me how people think gas goes in and exhaust comes out but never even consider that gas is just the catalyst you're actually burning oxygen in the engine and the engine has an air intake.

I feel bad for their neglected air filters...

Fortunately I have a video of going through the swamp with water over the headlights to justify to the doubters.

On that same trip I got stuck in a buggy rut with what would have been my stock intake underwater, but ECU above the water line, fortunately snorkel did it's thing and filter stayed bone dry even though I was stuck for about 5-10 minutes.

I did have to vacuum a couple gallons of water out of my carpet though.

 

I mean my exhaust sat happily bubbling away underwater for 5-10 minutes with no issues. So long as your engine stays running and you're not like actually underwater I don't think there's going to be an issue with water traveling back up the exhaust.

Stay away from Dobinson. I bought one too, and it doesn’t fit very well at all. Their template is shit.
