The DD clear lenses that are spot and flood are not SAE complaint. Is that what you have?

The DD SS3 clear driving pattern lenses I have are marked SAE.

My SAE driving lenses do not have SAE markings. Earlier SAE SS3s had the markings on the bezel, later they moved them to the lens. The ones I have are earlier production. Could ping Diode Dynamics if you need SAE markings and don't have them.

Finally got around to installing the ditch lights (aimed as Aux High Beams at this time) and boy they have me wondering if I need a light bar. Went on a drive down a dark road and they light output is stellar.

The light modules are the Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro Selective Yellow variant with the Clear Driving Lens installed.

Notes: Low Beams are the Philips XV2 hid bulbs with 35w, blasphemy I know, and I have all auxiliary lights powered by the Switch Pros 9100. Hood glare is a non issue from the inside.

Lookin good. How do you like the switchpro panel? I'm just using OEM style switches to replace the blanks but that pad looks nice and compact. Good use of that space.

I’m a fan. The 9100 makes it super easy to consolidate everything and the abundance of configurable options like strobe, led panel brightness and so on is nice. I changed mine to red and lowest brightness as I didn’t wire in the light sensing wire.

Being able to use Bluetooth is a nice perk as well.

I like the flush fit but I did notice it’s not 100% OEM tight to the rest of the panels.

If I had to do it over I’d probably skip the sdhq piece and just drill the holes provided with the switch pros.

MESO doesn’t print a 9100 panel for the T4R? Bummer.

They seem to be mainly Tacoma based but they’re slowly branching out. Maybe one day the 4Runner will get as much support from them.

My Driving lens has the SAE marking.

Added another shot to display the 4000k goodness. REALLY wish DD had an offering in that color temp for their light bars.

Could build a sudo one with a row of several SC2s, though not nearly as elegant.

I’ll have to keep that thought in mind when DD comes out with their larger offering.

I have to admit I didn’t expect the current offering to throw so much light so far down when the major power outage occurred.

I thought about that but all of those wiring splices would be a pain. Common internal busses are nice... Those little emitters would be too finicky for soldering by hand huh?

The LEDs need mounted on a metal core pcb board, so that there is a thermal path from the backside of the chip to the heatsink/housing. It would be easier to splice a new harness together to provide power for each little pod in a row. You'd just need the appropriate deutch connectors, pins and crimp tool.

You're right. I think I saw somewhere that I'd need a hot air solder to even try. I think they're all oven set at the factory.

A hot air soldering station is very handy, but you could try other means.

If you wanted to use an external driver, you could simply pull the existing pcb out, buy LEDs pre-mounted (depending on your source) on mcpcb's of the same thickness (so you retain focus) and then just have to solder your wiring to each LED.

You could diy your own Max pods this way, with the 2 optic pods if you reaaally wanted to push the envelope on output. DD drives the osram chips very conservatively - they're pushing for a certain performance envelope, and very high reliability as a manufacturer. If people like the lights, but expected absolute bleeding edge performance to Also be covered by a long warranty period, DD could lose a lot of business if they pushed 6 or 7A through each osram chip and develop a reputation for failing or fading lights. 6 or 7A through those osram boost chips would make for Very high output and extremely high CD numbers, but the limit then becomes the heatsinking. Realistically, the moving airflow of a vehicle would allow for the necessary cooling to push that high an output, but if mall crawlers or offroaders start frying lights because theyre stationary in hot environments, DDs reputation suffers.

Aren't the PCBs and components for each of the power levels different as well?

The postman brought me something neat today: Cibie LED Super Oscars, wide beam/high power version, in black (P/N 45312). These aren’t SAE J581 spec, so technically outside the scope of this thread. I am excited to see how they perform regardless. I expect the wider beam to excel for my intended use: spotting deer lurking on the side of dark backcountry roads.

I'm saying buy LEDs or mount LEDs on standard sized mcpcb's from a vendor (usually 10/12/16/20mm round are easy to find in different thicknesses) and use an external driver to feed whatever power your new arrangment needs (most led's are usually around 3v forward voltage, so 4 in series nets you about 12v, letting you use a current regulator instead of more complex circuitry).

Yes, the 3 leds available all have different footprints, so they use different pcb's that also mount the driver circuitry.

@ardrummer292, very cool purchase. I hope you dig em.

Addendum to my previous post. I couldn’t find any information about whether these lights would fit on an ARB deluxe bumper, so I figured I’d take a chance and order them anyway. Turns out they do fit, although with almost no clearance (~1mm gap to the upright support) when installed in the outermost mounting holes. I prefer this mounting location because I want to minimize disruption of airflow to the radiator.
