Seemingly dead battery but no

I start my truck every few days to keep things happy during the winter.
2020 Taco TRD Pro

Did the key fob disable (hold lock and press unlock 2 times to disable) last nite.

Went to start the truck today, walked up to it pressed the fob to enable and nothing.
Door would not unlock.
Used key to get in. Dome lights did not come on. seemingly no power.
Checked battery 11v tried to put on trickle charger and the horns and lights kept going off. so the battery is not totally dead.

Removed battery to take into my shop and inspect. cell to cell was fine put on trickle charger or an hour 13.5v
Went to reinstall in truck, put positive terminal on, went to put on negative and the horn and lights kept going off.

WTF now I cant even put the battery back in.
Dealer service writers are useless...bring it in...DUH !!!
On the phone with toyota and they are not so helpful.
Ideas out there??

 

Call a wrecker and have it transported to the dealer on a rollback. Sounds like an alarm issue.

 

11v is very low its going to take a lot longer than an hour for a trickle charger to fully charge the battery. In the future either use the charger you have if it has an automatic shutoff or get one with an auto feature so you can have it hooked up all the time if you are not using the vehicle for extended periods and you shouldn't have a problem.

 

As far as the alarm not sure but I would charge the battery for like 6 hours at least and then try it.

 

It would be odd on such a new truck but did you check the electrolyte levels on the battery?

Batteries are basically treated as Remove and Replace items on vehicles these decades but on an unsealed factory product the maintenance of proper fluid levels should keep one alive for a long time.

 

Have you tried to enable with the back up fob?

battery is fine I started it yesterday. I have a little experience with batteries working on electric golf cars for 5 years right out of high school.

 

ON a side note I did a remote start last week let it idle for 15 mins, went out and it should have shut off upon nearing the truck. It did not. Went inside pressed the start stop button and it shut off and would not retart.
Did some errands came home an hour later and it started just fine.

So there is something in the fob/alarm/start/alarm system

Sounds to me like its stuck in whatever mode the truck goes in when you disable fob

 

Rollback driver does not care. He will put it on a dolly if need be. Also there is an "unlock" tab I believe that can be pressed in situations like this.

 

I thought about it for a tad and backtracked, what did I install that could interfere with a signal.

DING !!! I unplugged the BAFX OBDII Diagnostic Interface. I use the torque pro app on my tablet. Something must not jive with the signal when I locked the fob.
Makes sense as the last time I remote started it acted funky...

Good on you. Chances are with Toyota trucks, the last place someone was is the first place to look for the problem. Very few stock vehicle problems.

 

now, FULLY CHARGE the battery. with the remotes constantly searching, transmitting a signal to lock, or unlock, it will discharge the battery over a short time. I usually charge my vehicles every 4-6 weeks to full charge. for vehicles that sit for days, or weeks, this is a MUST, or you will have problems. Your results may vary. Ski

 

YO !...ace...it WAS NOT THE BATTERY. It was my OBDII transmitter that fouled up the fob lockout.
Removed the OBDII transmitter and it fired right up.

I used to own a tow truck company and I would see your problem quite often. After opening a customers hood and hooking up a battery booster pack to their dead or really weak battery. The alarm would go off until i’d press the unlock button a bunch of times on an active fob.
I think it has to do with the security system being armed, then losing power and going to sleep. When it gets woken up with the power from the booster pack, it thinks someone is breaking in because the door and/or hood are open or unlocked. So it triggers the alarm. Might be the same prob with your truck. Hook the fully charged battery up and hit the unlock button on both your fobs to check.

Also, i’m not 100% sure about our Tacomas, but some newer vehicle charging systems won’t properly charge the battery while just idling in the driveway; they need to be driven for at least 30 mins or so to charge up after a dead battery.

 

Yep, there’s a little cover near the shifter that can be popped off with a small screwdriver. Then put the screwdriver in the hole and press down while moving the shifter out of park. Works slick....

 

Charge it. What have you got to lose?
