This. I have embarrassed locked F/R rigs on 35s and no duals with my IFS tacoma on 33s with duals and one locker.

IMO I would never lock the front on an IFS tacoma and go lowest gears possible and get a winch. Winching is way more fun than changing CVs

My truck was IFS on 33s, duals and armored up and was my DD. I had to drive it 8+hrs one way to wheel it. Very drive able with that setup, I loved the truck when it was in that condition, so capable. Since I have SAS'd it's not really that much more fun, I really only gained a front locker and 37s out of the deal. I run the same difficulty trails now that I did pre SAS (very hard) it's just now I don't have to focus on picking lines as much and I can do it quicker.

One of the reasons I am sad to see this truck get sold, it was like a 4cyl clone of my truck from 2008!!

True. Slow speed is your friend.
I went locked first and didn't have too many issues with wheel hop and didn't struggle too bad. But the duals just really give you so much more control and opened up more options

What are y’all talking about? Duals and lockers are obviously the answer.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I should just armor up "sliders, skids and rear bumper" and give the rubicon a try in my taco. I've only ran it once and it was a piece of cake in my old SAS dual case truck with 36" swampers. I just remember thinking how much harder this would be in my Tacoma! I figured being able to put things in slow mo would increase my chances of success a lot! I'm not interested in destroying my truck, I like exploring and getting off the grid, my set up is perfect for that. That Rubicon trip was so much fun last year I would love to do annually. I like having a truck just good enough to get me close to the gnarly stuff so I can watch others destroy their stuff.

I count it, I paid that much money for a winch for a reason lol!! I aIso go in the woods to drive around them and have fun, not to lay under my truck wrenching on it!:D I'm locked F/r now on 37s and I still pull cable, whatever!!

Haha my buddies disagree with me too. It's a pride thing. I'll try shit a bunch and pull cable as a last resort in order to not break shit if at the offroad park. If on a trip and I'm remote, I'd probably be more cautious and pull cable sooner though.

I swear theres a subset of this hobby that goes out just to break shit because they like wrenching on crap in the woods. It sucks wheeling with those people LOL!! I give it 3 tries and if I'm not making progress I pull cable or bypass it, if I can.

I shed my wheeling ego and pride a while ago, it makes trips more fun.

Lol I def do not enjoy wrenching on shit in the woods. The best trips bring on carnage over time vs major carnage in one spot leaving you stuck for hours. I agree, a bad break can ruin a trip. My NH trip was a cool one that had a lot of random weird breaks. Deep water crossings destroying a fan blade and radiator, flat tire, busted window switch, fried PS pump, pretzeled front drive shaft are all things that was split between the three of us. No major trip ending carnage (well the front DS was) but little breaks that added to the adventure.

Yea kinda true, but there is a difference between something breaking randomly and some dumbass ramming an obstacle for 20mins at full throttle and breaking something because they don't want to pull cable, those suck.

    I must be getting old!!

Eh, I only had to change one ever due to my no front locker IFS policy lol. When I had a jeep that was locked up front I would pop a shaft evrey time it went in 4wd, and yea could change it in 10mins,.still annoying.

Now body damage that's a different story, as long as my windows are intact and the doors work its game on!!
