Once again, it's... Story Time with Gritto.

They're breaking ground for a new subdivision. See the mounds of dirt and rocks in the middle of picture.



I used to dove hunt there with my buddy Marco.
It was a good spot too, downhill beyond the mounds of dirt .
For some reason I've never quite been able to figure out, doves have an affinity for apple orchards (in the background).
They'll loaf there in the heat of mid-day and roost there in the evening.
Get near an apple orchard and you'll see plenty of doves.
There's also a brook down there in the draw.
But doves seem to be just as happy drinking out of a dirty mud puddle.

I've mentioned Marco in at least one previous Story Time.
Born in Panama, his folks worked in the Canal Zone when it was still U.S. territory.
From the time he was a little boy, he always wanted to become an American citizen.
The easiest way was to join the U.S. Army.
He joined before things heated up in 'Nam, and trained as a Huey pilot.

He had some hairy stories about flying along valleys in the Central Highlands for insertions and extractions.
NVA anti aircraft gunners on the hills had to shoot down at him.
He used to say that fighter pilots thought they were hot shit and invincible.
Helo pilots, OTOH, knew disaster was always seconds away.
Let those fighter jocks take a ride with him sometime...

After the War, he flew commercially.
His last job was as a Life Flight pilot.

Marco is gone now.
I miss that old bastard.
