Definitely check out the auto wreckers, might take a few trucks to get the parts you need, but anything is doable.

There is sentimental value and realistic real world. Converting from 2wd to 4wd is silly as trading for 4wd is a no brainer. If you still want to convert due to sentimental reasons, it will cost $6K easy and will not be right electronically. Good luck.

First of all, my condolences for the loss of your brother. Same reason I initially got my truck was because my brother had one very similar. Have you considered just adding a rear locker for now and see how that gets you by? Do you plan on wheeling or just want 4x4 for practicality?

Hard top camper...many more to add+
My thoughts...Sell it and buy one with 4wheel drive... Cost to add a four wheel drive system will be expensive...and not worth all the headaches when done , when the bugs come out

if you have to ask? Is the first sign ..DO NOT DO IT...
Best to find out who can do this? Find the cost and guarantees.and if looking ..with crawl control? Um?

Did you know there is a company in USA..who can put in diesel motor in 3rd Gen’s..cost over $20,000? These are new diesels motors from Japan ..where they built diesel Tacoma’s for Japanese markets and the world..

Any car or truck can be made into a 4x4 ..just that, how much are you willing to spend....?
When find the cost to convert...I am sure you will sell this truck and buy one that has 4x4 already..

    I vote..Don’t do it...Not worth it!
    Aloha

I had. 1957 Chevy wagon ..boy I wanted to built into a hot rod...I was to young and poor... a few years ago...I saw a 1957 Chevy wagon with 4-wheel drive...the two door wagon was fitted on a Bronco frame..look so “cool”

You would have to get a whole new transmission, transfer case, ecu, axles, front diff, etc. Its not even worth it. Unless money isn't an issue, but then just trade for a 4x4

Kings, 275/70/17, a few custom items, lots of Meso mods.
I commend you for wanting to keep it. As stated above looking for a totaled donor truck would be the best route. Not sure what the total cost and time would be but probably not cheap. I guess I would ask, do you need a 4wd? If so then take your time finding out and getting everything you need to avoid long down time. If you dont need a 4wd you can still do basically all the same mods as a 4wd but just wont have the front drive line. Lots of great looking 2wd pre-runner trucks out there.:hattip:

Like many have said, trade it in for a 4wd. Not worth the headache and quests to find the parts when in the end it might not play nicely with the rest of the electronics on the truck. At the end of the day it's your money and you can do what you please with it.

    Florida has no hills !!
So 4x4 is not needed right away.
In the meantime go get some nice wheels and tires on it. Perhaps a small lift on it. Then start planning out on what it will take to convert. Maybe a solid front axle , an FJ Cruiser transfer case...

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
Not as easily done as with 2nd gens. 2nd gens have the luxury of having an available manual xfer case out of the FJ cruiser that mates up to the A750F transmissions. To my knowledge. There aren’t any direct bolt on xfer cases other than the 3rd gen electric xfer case. It to mention the plethora of electronic systems on a 3rd gen that all need to communicate. Far more than a 2nd gen has.
To this date, option for a 3rd gen is mainly trade-in/sell or find a junked 3rd gen and swap over ecu, 4x4 ecu, add wiring harnesses, modify crossmembers, and everything else.
Is it possible, yes, anything is with $ but it may be more of a hassle.

You should create a build thread to track your progress if you do go forward with it! I'm sure even those who are against you would love to see it.

I would expect the manual case from the FJ would bolt up to the AC60F. May need to modify a bit to get the shift rods to clear everything, but it wouldn't be too bad all things considered.

It very well could. I’ve seen a thread or two of guys working on making adapters for the shift rails. I’ll assume that’s the intent behind those, but I haven’t read into it to much. I’m halfway through a 2nd gen swap so I can’t speak with 100% confidence for the 3rd gen, but being different motors, I’d assume bolt pattern/layout and splines may be different? I know internally they’re the same up to 5th gear, but the AC60 has a 6th gear and I’m not savvy enough to know the differences. Props to anyone that attempts it!

edit: quick search revealed this. It can be done!

I totally understand your sentiment and wanting to keep it in the family. However, your brother bought that model and configuration (2WD) because it was what he could afford and aspire to at the time and you may want to consider that the best way to honor him and his legacy and have his son remember him, is to keep it exactly as he purchased it. You are a good man to keep it for his son.
