    Good morning all,

Our county has been scheduling vaccine's all week. The local clinic has 75 slots open for 70+ tomorrow, first come first serve. All the senior centers (all two of them in this county) have received the vaccine. Hopefully the 65+ group will get started Feb 1 here.

Cleaned off the remainder of the new snow on the patio yesterday so the sun can melt off the ice - grilling this weekend.

Have a great Thursday - I looked it up to make sure my reminder was accurate - trash day

Sorry no pics - as I was taking down the trash to the street six mule deer bucks walked right in front of me across the drive - the smallest was a 4 x 2. they are so neighborhood friendly they simply looked me over and kept walking up and over the hill on our property.

Seems normal (?) or should I write standard?

Anyone have any clues on getting a geriatric dog to sleep past 3:45AM?

Is it a bladder issue or just nervous sleeping? We put our Lab on CBD oil four years ago and noticed a lot of positive results not to mention calmer slept sound, less joint issues. you might want to try that.

I don’t get CBD oil. It supposedly gives you all these health benefits but avoids the one reason to smoke pot. Getting stoned.

I am not sure how to respond to that - LOL

Recreational pot is legal here but I would not suggest giving that to his senior dog. CBD does have a lot of potential health benefits, but like any medication not everyone responds the same, you just have to try it and see.

Nervous. His bladder is fine. What brand CBD oil? We tried some VERY expensive stuff, no change. Real ripoff, IMHO.

We went with a local shop up here in the mtns. The do ship all over the country. What kind did you give your dog? was it a chewable or actual oil, CBD with an olive oil base, we found the oil based worked while we still have a bag of chewable - didn't like the side affects the chewable had.

If you want to go to a direct chat we can send you some we have left over after our Lab pasted the week before Christmas - he was 13 and his Discord Lupus finally got the best of him. What we did find is it took two weeks before we saw the improvements.

Good suggestion, there is a balance, too much exercise and he is worse.

I’ve had dogs all my life and all of them when they get old like us have issues sleeping through the night. Often it’s because they like us old guys have to get up and pee. Also often again like us they suffer aches, pains and arthritis and get up because they are uncomfortable. And of course there can be numerous other reasons. I’ve found most of the time it’s due to arthritic pain. They express pain in different ways. CBD oil works great for some and not at all for others. Talk to your vet about this and combating pain. I’ve used CBD with mixed results. I’ve also used prescription meds like rimadyl and gabapentin. Over the counter omega3 fish/krill oil can do wonders. There is also glucosamine chondroitin for dogs. I’ve used a combination of these with good results. There is also acupuncture for dogs and cats which also can be quite effective. Talk to your vet about the various pain modalities.

I can absolutely sense you know what you are talking about.

Currently he is on Gabapentin. It kinda sorta works and is much better than without. All his nervousness is from pain. He does not complain much, you know how most dogs are.

We have tried most things you list and 3 different vets ran out of ideas. BUT we have not tried Omega3. We have some, will try. Thanks!

We have utilized a lot of the same and add one non-medical option. We found a memory foam dog bed that we kept near a cracked open window which seemed to help the aches as Phoenix got older. He was on Glucosamine since he was two - all of our dogs (retrievers) are on Glucosamine starting at two years of age just because of genetic arthritis and joint pain in the breads when they get older. Good luck trying different remedies, sounds like you already have tried a lot to comfort him.

If you use gabapentin along with an anti inflammatory like rimadyl it can be very effective. In fact generally vets start with an anti inflammatory and the add gabapentin. Gabapentin is not a pain medication but is used “off label “ in combination with anti inflammatory meds. It’s complex but the two together can be quite effective.
Dogs require more omega3 amounts than we do to be effective. It depends on their weight. Ask your vet for the amount formula or you can find it on the web. Start slowly and increase the dosage. It can cause minor side effects at first like diarrhea but they generally will tolerate the omega3 well.
Non strenuous exercise like daily walks are very beneficial for arthritis (and good for us peeps too). Excess weight can grossly exacerbate arthritic pain.

I too have used glucosamine with my labs from an early age. They are all hunting dogs and tend to over do it in the field and that tends to exacerbate joint problems. Be sure to use the stuff for dogs not humans. Costco has it for a reasonable price. Most of these things take a while to work. I know you take great care of your pups, they are truly Gods 4 legged children.

Regarding CBD, be careful what you buy, as there are a lot of crap CBD brands out there.
