Nope. Not enough ice to fish on, no snow to ski/snowmobile/snowshoe on, no snow to help insulate the house, just lots of wind & rain damage...pretty lame winter so far.

Most years the snowmobiling isn't any good until about now, 3rd weekend of January. But now it's time to start panicking.

This map is pathetic. There should at the very least be some red in the NH and Maine. At least at Baxter State Park.

Holy shit that is pathetic. Wow.

In more upbeat news, I am 99% certain I will be starting a garage/storage build this spring! Contractor is on his annual vacation and just retired, but I think he'll come down and help a neighbor put it up. Idea is either a pole barn or a metal shed kit, but side it with board and batten. I think it will prob be a kit type, as the prices will be a lot lower. Jamaica cottages has a decent price on a 25x36 that would work well. The storage containers are great, but I want electric, I want a floor with open space so I can do some work on it, and I want to install my nice stove I bought that didn't meet code to go into the MIL house for some heat.

I'd ideally like a 40 foot length and 30-32 deep, which would send me to a metal kit type. The contractor build a similar one in our place we used to live pretty cheap just ordering thru the local hardware supplier, so I'm assuming thats how he will want to do this one too.

No it's bullshit. My yard is like a damn swamp. I had to go get 10 bags of mulch and 5 bales of hay last weekend to fill in the area where my dog runs/ chases cars inside of our fence. In the corner where she turns was a giant hole that was a mud pit. The rest of her little track was also all churned up into a mud pit. And my damn kids ski lessons got cancelled last weeked case it was a friggin rain storm. Ridiculous.

No reason you can't do a slab with a kit.

Yeah, it's bare ground around here.
On the plus side, the cold weather this week should be finally making some ice. On the other hand, it'll probably warm up and rain again soon.

That might be optimistic. I'm solidly in the 12-15, but I doubt I have more than 6.

I would do a slab either way, it’s basically going to come down to overall cost and what my neighbor prefers to do. The problem I have with post and beam is the beams everywhere unless you pay a ton of money.

I’d like to be able to move my tractor around without worrying about knocking down the building. A big open span would be the best way I think. And with wood siding it takes away the metal look I’m not completely in love with.

in my head, 40k should do it if I am doing most of the work, or getting help. BIL is an electrician and Uncle in law is a concrete guy.

Insulation would add a bit too, but not sure if that will be in the initial build

Big ass metal beams will solve that. You could always do post and beam framing for the walls and pre-fabbed full span metal trusses for the roof.

You know, we might not be far off now that I think about it and add it up. I cleared 5" of heavy wet stuff this weekend then it seems like we got 1-2 more every day after that.

Wonder what that cost would look like? Any of you construction guys have any experience with that? That would be a nice building and from what I've heard if you keep the roof on a post and beam they basically last forever (and keep the beams dry on the bottoms)

I bet you are, we are getting another inch or so today, its coming down hard right now. My cousin in Stanford has about the same. Every day this week has been flurries none-stop so its hard to tell, but it adds up.

Cost, I dunno. Especially now with prices of everything going bonkers cause of current nonsense. Engineering wise it's a pretty easy thing to design. Any halfway confident engineer could design it. You'd need footings though, not just a slab for the outer wall/ posts.

we were looking at morton buildings (i can get you a contact for a guy there) to build a "barndominium" (i hate that name but apparently it's what it's called). they're more efficient than stick built because there are fewer seams. if you outfit it and assemble it yourself it's also cheaper than stick built. we weren't doing that and were needing to hire a gc for the interior, so that ate up the savings. so in the end we are just going a more traditional route
