If someone is looking just to drop money to buy a mount, you might want to check out JeepUniq. They are pricey and mostly specialize in Jeep-specific mounts but they make universal ones as well with a RAM ball for just about any combination of radio, mic, and inReach you can think of. If nothing else, they're good for raiding for inspiration if anyone else has a 3d printer.

Tell me that selling my truck and getting a GX470 is a really bad idea.

First and foremost, I love when folks wheel these things. I don't even know why. Second is that it would get rid of a truck payment. Third is that these things are almost bullet-proof. And fourth is the room for activities. Finally, somewhere in that mix is V8. None of it makes sense, but I don't think any of my vehicle purchases have ever made sense.

Reasons why you shouldn't do it:
    • You'd be moving from a newer truck to an older one.
    • Less functional vs having a truck bed.
    • SUV's are incredibly tippy offroad. I speak from wheeling with 4runners, which the GX470 basically is.
    • Bullet proof, eh. Really no greater than any other Toyota. Joe semi-recently acquired one and it's really nothing too special.

    Rebuttal:

    1. I'm not too concerned about that. I found one with 90k miles on it in great condition. It'd also make me cry less when I scratch paint in the woods. Used 2006 Lexus GX 470 470 for Sale in Manassas VA 20110 Beyond Motors LLC (beyondmotorsva.com)
    2. Yes. Although my bed isn't super functional anyway with a toolbox and Softopper. (#shortbedproblems) The comfort and interior room of the GX is a big swaying point for me.
    3. Yes.
    4. Maybe? 3.5 has a shorter long-term track record.

You make good points though. Very logical points.

Keep the Tacoma, buy the GX470 as your second vehicle, trust me you couldn’t live with the gas mileage if it’s your daily driver!

I have been tossing the idea of an older Toyota/Lexus too...it seems like the gx470 is probably the best value for oldish Toyota’s. Everything else is like gold, especially 2nd gen Tacomas haha. Trading in the third gen on something cheaper and getting a beater is my idea. All ideas for now though haha

Please check the condition of the frame, and rear diff before purchase, they are very prone to rust, took me about 3 months to find one with a clean frame, also it’s nice if the timing belt/water pump has been replaced according to manufacturer’s recommendation

If I got it, keeping the Tacoma couldn't happen. My primary reason for doing this would be so I wouldn't have a payment. A beater something or other would have to serve as a daily.

For sure. I was just getting ready to check the interval for the timing belt and water pump. If it hasn't been done, I could use it as a bargaining point. I can do the work myself.

You'd be losing a payment but then buying a 15 year old truck that's going to need maintenance. Are you really gonna be saving much money?

Don't buy it as your only vehicle. You'll eventually regret it in my opinion.

I sold my Tacoma and got a used GX460. No regrets.

I 100% agree with that. Especially after it's lifted, etc.

Yeah that makes sense. For me it would be a mix of technology and payment. Like I kind of want a vehicle with adaptive cruise control, better headlights, CarPlay, etc. Which my truck doesn’t have. It’s basically an old vehicle tech wise haha. I could probably get a Subaru with most of the tech for a good price then find a “beater” Toyota. I have too many ideas though so we will see haha

    Haha - sorry :)

Definitely an upgrade in terms of power, comfort, space with no sacrifice in towing and still fairly capable offroad. I see no downside beside losing the small bed. Can easily be remedied by buying a cheap utility trailer for under a grand.
