You can open it up in the menu to listen to some air frequencies, I've listened to approach and departure of my local airport.

I'll have to find that. I like AWOS sometimes and would really like 122.8 while at work.

Right there at the bottom of the picture I posted. Mod opens up to TX on those frequencies.

Ham Radio Outlet offers the MARS mod as an additional “product” when you purchase a Yaesu radio. Not saying it’s for everyone but I also don’t think it’s as bad as some of you may think.

Their site says that the mod is for people authorized with MARS or CAP. Do you have to prove that to them before they will sell you the mod?

No idea. I only noticed it as a product I may like when I ordered my FT3D. I did the mod myself. Yaesu has a small grommet in the body of the radio in the exact location of the piece that needs to be removed. Go figure!

Nope. Have 2 radios from them and all I had to do was add to cart.

DX Engineering does (or say they do) as I recall.

Mars/whatever mod is the dumbest thing ever.

If SHTF, why would you want to xmit on a tiny sliver of bandwidth that only nerds with modified radios MIGHT occasionally listen to? No offense to anyone, but I don't know anyone with a "mars mod" rig that I'd want to assist me with anything.....

You're also going to need an antenna resonant on the extra dumb frequency you now can use.

If there is an apocalypse and I find I need to xmit on the air bands, I'll drive over to the local airport. It probably won't be that busy....

It includes FRS/GMRS/MURS, but who needs those bands just drive over to the local walmart and pickup some walkies because people don't go ape shit when SHTF and buy up everything.

Don't those Bow-Fang walkie talkies already xmit on those frequencies?

If you have enough bullets, you can just take your neighbor's walkie talkie.....

That's my reason for not doing it, but others don't want to have so many radios. An option is all it is.

    sure....

Illegal to mod a radio? Stewards of RF privileges' - absolutely. Stewards of common sense - absolutely. If I could have afforded an all band VHF/UHF/HF radio, I would have bought one.

So, your saying I should have multiple radios for multiple bands? That is idiotic.

For me, it would be nice to have one radio for Ham use as well as to use for FRS/GMRS with a group while wheeling.

It was a serious question, but when you bring that point up it does sound like a dumb question. lol

That is kinda why I always do the mod. I have all HAM freq and GMRS and FRS and receive airband, WX, digital with a hotspot or Fusion through a repeater. All of that on one mobile 50/15/5 watt radio.

Do you use a single antenna for uhf/vhf Ham and FRS/GMRS?

Maybe if you don’t mean any offense you should stop using words like “nerds” and “dumb.” This is a hobby and fun for a lot of us. It’s a hobby built on experimentation and tinkering. It’s people like you that are killing it. STFU with your virtue signaling and gate keeping. If you don’t like it, ignore it.
