IMHO, don't go there. Not that you can't, but at what cost.

It's not just money, but time, hard ball busting work and odds are you'll be getting a fair amount of headaches chasing ghost (issues). No pun intended.

    Sorry for your loss

with all the added electronics and safety systems in modern day cars/trucks, this sounds like it would be a wiring/electrical nightmare to me but fundamentally it should be doable, setting aside cost anyway. Having a donor vehicle of the same year and trim but with 4wd would probably simplify it as much as can be. Or just gut everything and do a solid axle 4wd swap, but if you can't do the fabrication work yourself that will be $$$$$$

This is but one of many issues that could pop up when you try to re-engineer a good working factory vehicle:

“I installed a genesis dual battery kit about 2 years ago, and since then its been slowly ripping apart my engine bay”...Oops!

If you're trying to keep it oem by adding 4wd, I bet your looking over 15k. Maybe start with a lift, rear locker, and tires and see if that works for you.

Do you have any reputable 4WD shops nearby? They might be able to help.

It's funny, out here (Sol Cal) you see people doing the exact opposite to trucks. Removing the CV's / Diff just so they can gain more travel and don't have to worry about extended axles. You can also run customs race style spindles and hubs with "lift" built into them, unlike our snowplow 4x4 trucks with that low ground clearance at the subframe.

I guess if you don't live near the desert , then you might want that 4WD for mud/hills/snow.

I rarely use 4x4. It's way more fun to just float across sand / dirt at speed. Also in 2WD the steering response is super sharp. At speed in 4H the truck wants to understeer and just keep in a straight line. But again if you don't have places to beat in 2wd then I guess 4WD turtle off road is what you do

Maybe look into installing a solid axle front end.

I’m still thinking the cheapest route would be buying a whole donor vehicle for the swap - copart can be your source for this....

However... how cool would a third gen xrunner be? Supercharger or turbo (you already have the hood skoop - air ride drop maybe some metal hacking mods to get it extra extra low. It would be way less expensive and Florida has nice flat roads to enjoy.

With the extra cash you have saved you can buy a quad to go mudding in - or a beater Jeep Cherokee.

parts alone from copart will be HIGH and you will need neighbors that don’t care you are running a wrecking yard.

Just lift and lock it like a Pre-Runner unless you are crawling.

Keep it as is and buy a cheap Jeep for beating on.

There’s going to be lots of problems and gremlins if you do the conversion. Especially if you pay a shop a fortune to do it and it’s their first time. It’s a nice newer truck drive it and don’t mutilate it.

Enjoy your new 2wd truck how your brother enjoyed it. Your money will be better spent elsewhere instead of converting it to 4x4. Especially if you don't have the skills to diy
