Bed Mount OB Air Compressor Switch Mounting Question

I recently purchased the Expedition Essentials bed mount kit with the

$338 CKMA12 On-Board Air Compressor High Performance 12 Volt for Air Locker Differentials and Tire Inflation

CKMA12 single compressor for my 2018 Taco TRD OR 4x4 and was trying to decide where to mount the switch (near the compressor or in the CAB). The extended harness was designed to mount the switch in the CAB but I kind of like the idea of mounting it near the compressor so I don't have to run back and forth to turn it on/off. Was wondering your thoughts?

P.S. I do not have air lockers.

 

You probably want it with aux or the truck on, I'd mount it in the cab.

 

How hard is this install? I was thinking of doing on board air but a little worried about the install.

 

I have the compressor always on and have the on/off switch & coupling right next to it. I am using Mobtown's locking cubby since I had to cut the hole (2020 model) One of my favorite mods, makes airing back up so much easier.

 

I drive a few thousand miles on dirt roads each year. I ended up ripping my compressor out and am currently trying to find another solution. Not trying to talk you out of the mount as it’s a great concept... but an absolute failure on execution if your use-case is similar.

 

Yea it does get filthy. Doesn't seem to affect it though. If I was doing it over, I would have filled in the area behind the compressor to try and keep the dust/dirt out.

 

I was able to use the Expedition mount for an ARB single. Their extension cable is not long enough to reach from the passenger side to the battery area, so I had to make the extension. The switch is in the dash, left side, next to the blank (thank you dremel).

 

I def will have it connected power only when the engine is running. I decided to mount it in the cab, left side of steering wheel next to the auto headlight brights switch. Just need to run power from the engine bay to the bed now.

 

All done and working.

A few notes:

1. I added a lock to the cubbie door. Just a little more secure (but someone could break in if they really wanted to)
2. I discovered that purple wires under the dash are engine-on 12V+ so I just tapped into one on the inverter switch two doors down from my compressor switch. Super easy.
3. I added a 90deg cable clamp to the bottom of the box to secure the power cables coming into the box. Nice and clean.
4. I mounted the relay and fuse blocks on the drivers side engine bay wall. Two threaded holes there near the top that worked perfectly
5. I put flex-tape on all the open holes and gaps. I plan to add a top cover and flex tape on that in the future to keep as much dust/water out as possible.
6. I plan to silicone around the cubbie door frame to seal that also as rain can get in the gaps.

So far super happy with this setup. Will try it out next week at King of The Hammers race in the high desert!

 

Nice work! My biggest regret is that I didn’t seal off the backside. But it doesn’t bother me to the point where I’m going to pull everything out again

 

I was actually able to use my compressor for good for the first time at King of the Hammers races this past weekend. One person in our camping group had a flat on their trailer and I was able to get his repaired time pumped back up! (of course I used it to air back up after the weekend as well).
