I blew the engine in my 2007 Tacoma 4.0. I purchased a used engine that supposedly has 64k miles on it. According to my mechanic the engine looked good at install and checked out fine. However since there was no VIN information that came with engine I haven't idea what year this used engine came out from. Is there a VIN id on the used engine that could tell me this?

How did you blow the engine? Asking for a friend with an 05 with 219k miles...

Blew my engine towing my jeep up a freeway incline. I guess I was pushing her too hard.

I had 196000 miles on engine. I was pulling my jeep up a hill on the interstate. I guess I was pushing her too hard for the high mileage.

If I had to replace my engine I would be finding me one of those 2.0 Litre clean diesel VW TDI engines that got pegged for emissions cheating and throw that in there. Turbo Diesel with a tune!

That would be gutless as fuck. The Tacoma weighs probably double what the VW did.

With a small tune and a DPF EGR delete the TDI could easily make double the HP as the stock 4.0L, and out of the box the TDI already produces about the same torque. Plus now you get the added benefit of double the fuel economy.

From 140 HP to 472 HP out of a 2.0 diesel with a couple small mods?

Sorry but I’m not buying that math haha.

If VIN not on the engine they better have some paperwork where it came from, or allow me to tear into it before any commitment. Otherwise a seriously low ball price is all I'd offer.

mechanic could've recorded VIN if you asked him to but didn't
    engines usually don't say VIN
    just engine identification code

maybe it came from a 4runner

So the old diesels were simple and powerful, torquey
such as the famed 1.9L TDI ALH in Mk4 Jetta early model years, often bolted to manual trans.
    Which people sometimes tune.
Does not have emissions garbage on it such as adblue urea injector (piss) that tends to clog, and all the other stuff.
Later years they started doing that, as did every company. Such as Mercedes with the W211 diesels regarding older one (good) CDI and newer BlueTec.

Are you saying you'd purposely choose the garbage one over the old good one to swap in?

Rest of the world including AUS had diesel option for Tacoma/Hilux. That can be swapped in.
Rest of world often does offer that option (diesel engine) for people interested in Fuel Economy and Power.
vs. choice in US is usually only 1 option: Menu Item No.1: Shit On Plate

After research, you are correct, the TDI cannot produce those numbers. I was wrong.
What it can do though is produce the same HP as the stock 4.0L while almost doubling the torque so about 250HP+- and around 400lb ft of torque.
For comparison the Jetta (2.0L TDI model) weighs in at just over 3K Lbs and the Tacoma (DCSB TRD Sport model) is about 4.4K Lbs (curb weight)
I am standing by my statement that the TDI would be plenty of engine to push this platform and not, as you say "gutless." After all, what do you think they put in the hilux all over the world?
