The difference is the engine is not shutting off and restart right away. In another word, LT DingleBerry, sir, I don't like my engine running, and stop when I open the door and re-start within seconds all the time, it wears on the starter.

Then go outside with a brush, brush off the drivers door, start the truck, then brush the rest of the snow off, get in and drive away.
You’ll have to do that once the remote start stops working [like I mentioned earlier].

Bunch of weaks in this thread, damn.

How are they going to steal it? You think other cars that don't turn off if you can get in you can just drive away without the key? You hit the brake it dies, car goes out of park it dies. The computer knows both of those things already and could have been the trigger for no extra cost instead of the door.

Yeah keep up the name calling, that's a good way to convincing someone of your argument. What it tells me is you have none.

A Toyota starter probably has hundred of thousands of start cycles figured into the engineering, I doubt your restarting is doing jack to it.

Again, has anybody asked Toyota anywhere on the web and gotten an answer? Because a bunch of tacomaworld engineers aren't being very convincing of their argument at this point.

And it seems like the door is a fool proof way to make the system work as well...

That is pretty much the point of having a remote start. I can do all that and still do without a remote start function. I am saying the remote on Toyota is kinda pointless if you still have to stop the engine and re-start the engine.

The subscription service thru (DCM) can remote start you car anywhere in the world if your Smartphone can get on the internet.
The Key Fob is radio frequency and have to be within 80ft of the vehicle to work.
I just checked with my dealer he confirms the key fob remote start will still works after 1 year free trial ends, but I guess I won't find out until next year. I rarely use this function, since I have to restart my truck anyway, I just do it the old fashion way.

I am not here to argue nor try to convince anyone to begin with, I am simply agreeing with OP the remote start doesn't make sense to us.
Toyota is reliable no doubt, but it doesn't mean it will never break, anything man made can and will break over time.

You replied to me, not the other way around.

For the record I don't really care that much. My Taco doesn't even have remote start lol.

My wifes Rav4 does and I don't get the complaints about it stopping the motor. I didn't when I entered this thread, and I still don't. You do you.

My GMC Sierra had remote start and did not shut off when the door was opened but it had a keyed ignition . I don't have it on my Tacoma and would not like it because of the shut off because most engine wear is done on start up not that I'm to lazy to push the button or worried about the starter .

For the record, I quoted you to answer your open question at thread #77. By logic that is not an argument to begin with. I was point out the engine was stopping and starting again, other car doesn't do that when the driver push the button again to confirm ignition or key fob present (not sure this step is even necessary).

People, I can walk and know how to start my truck, we are just saying this feature is not helpful to us, it doesn't save me time or make my life easier, I won't ask for this option if it is not ready installed on my truck.

Exactly, Bleep100, That is why I don't like Toyota's remote start, it just doesn't make sense, since you have to go you car to start it if you want to keep it running.
The car is already locked, when you remote started, to open the door you have to have the key fob. The Car computer know where the key is.

I have a friend who have an Avalon, he was going to take his car in because this stupid remote start thing that stop the engine when door open, until I told him all Toyota does that even the after market remote start, there is no way around it.

This is how remote start should work:

Man, some people on this forum are so... defensive, putting it lightly. Y'all act like you researched your truck for years before buying it, knowing every little feature and shortcoming, and take a dump on anyone who has the gall to say something against the legendary Tacoma. Hate to break it to you diehards, but that's not how 99% of people buy a vehicle (and probably not how you bought yours, if you're being honest). The vast majority of people will take a general look at the vehicle, because they don't have hours to spend combing through it while the salesman lurks over your shoulder. There's not one person here who could honestly say they didn't notice something about their truck AFTER purchase that made them stop and think "huh, that could have been designed better." So what's wrong with wanting to chat with other owner's about that?

OP is absolutely right that some things could have been done better, and is well within his rights to hold it up against another foreign brand (from the same country, incidentally). If he was comparing it to a G-Wagon, there might be something to say, but he's comparing it to a relatively middle-of-the-road SUV, and y'all are losing your damn minds. The cut-sheets for both vehicles probably list things like "Remote Start", "Lane Assist", "Adaptive Cruise Control", etc. Did you honestly know before you bought yours that the adaptive cruise turned off under 30mph? Can you disagree that it would be way nicer if it went down to full stop like the CRV?

I personally think Toyota mailed it in with the 3rd gen Tacoma, at least the early years. The safety and luxury features are all lovely on the surface, but their functionally in every day living falls just short enough to make you wonder if they did the bare minimum to be able to put "Adaptive Cruise Control" on the cut-sheet and have it function during a test-drive in order to sell the vehicle. I know I'm not the only one frustrated by the ADC's three distance settings: mile, half mile, and quarter mile. I certainly didn't notice that during my test drive.

I personally adore my 2018 Tacoma, but I'm 27 and it was my first new-ish car, so obviously I'm going to be excited to have these cool new tech-y safety features, even if they fall short of a CRV, because I couldn't afford a loaded CRV even if I wanted one. If I was ten or twenty years older, though, I'd certainly be more salty about it, having bought a vehicle that seemed to have all of the same safety features on the surface, but really functioned a little less well during every day life.

Thanks just the same. Each vehicle has its purpose. Each has its specific features and function. A comparison of a family targeted SUV to a "working" truck just isn't reasonable. Apples vs Potatoes.

    Wife has a 2019 CRV, I have a '06 Tacoma. I prefer the Tacoma.

    Primary reasons,
    1. Less driver safety tech. This crap (IMHO) lulls the driver into a false sense of safety. Now, the driver doesn't need to "be aware".
    2. ECO mode kills engine response. It effectively disables the turbo on the weak 4 cylinder.
    3. Adaptive cruise is another device that lulls the driver into a catatonic state. I will control the speed depending on the current situation.

    Reasons I like the CRV.
    1. Wife is happy.
    2. better sound system.
    3. better fuel efficiency. (30 mpg vs 19 mpg Tacoma). Although, the driving range is about the same.

I've got an '18 Accord. Remote start is fabulous. I can open the door without the car shutting off, I can step away from the car with the remote, the car running, and you can't drive the car away without the remote being in proximity to the inner cabin. Seems dumb to me that you can remote start the Tacoma but it shuts it off when you open the door, I don't understand the logic of that.

Edit: I guess a fix would be for Toyota to add a proximity sensor to the remote/truck.

You are correct (I won't quote you, some people may think I am picking a fight).
It seems some people have emotional attachment to a brand. You just can't point out the Cons, only the Pros. I have no stock in Toyota, and this discussion is not a Tacoma bash.
The remote start annoys a lot people, I have not meet one person who appreciates Toyota's remote start.

I'm not trying to argue the tow capacities or gas mileage or anything between the two. They are clearly different machines with different purposes. I'm just saying that if both offer things like adaptive cruise control, I think its well within reason to say that one does it better.

Criticism is fair and you’ll see much of it on this forum, but repeated complaining about minuscule things will really rile up the fanbase. Toyota is known for its conservative approach which I think lends to its reputation for reliability.

As far as remote start, there’s no question Honda is far more user friendly and efficient while Toyota seemed to relegate remote start as an afterthought. Honda’s key fob allows you to recycle the the remote start before it times out. You can also roll down all of the windows with the remote, something I welcomed on warmer days.

The bitching is because there is NO WAY AROUND IT, you cannot MOD it or change it to the way you want it.
I can delete the chrome, I can change exhaust, I can add supercharger, change LED interior lighting etc...
The only thing left is to bitch, and Toyota is not even on here to hear it.
