TPMS question.

My 2010 regular cab needs new tires. Found a set of 2021 Tacoma take offs. Will the tpms work with my old truck?
Can I have the tpms removed from the spare and not worry about it? I check my tire pressure regularly. Great deal on tires and wheels, if it's not a big problem with the tpms!

 

You can make a cheat canister. I used some 3" ABS pipe and a couple caps. Glued the sensors inside with at least one of them mounted in a drilled hole so I could pressurize the canister. Discount tire charged me $10/tire to remove the sensors. Make sure they give them back to you complete with cores and everything.

3rd Gen tpms won’t work on 2nd gens. I bought 3rd Gen wheels and just have been dealing with the flashing tpms light. Will probably eventually throw some tape over it.

 

If you google something like "changing tpms without removing tires," there are quite a bit of instructions/videos on how to swap tpms sensors out without having to completely dismount the tires, which would require rebalancing, etc.

I don't know about 2021 vs. 2010 sensors. Tpms sensors work in certain frequency ranges depending on what the car manufacturer specs/type of tpms systems. Most car manufacturers are pretty consistent with using the same system through many years.

From what I can see, 2010 uses 315Mhz sensors. I couldn't find the info on 2021 (too new?), but 2020 uses 315Mhz as well, BUT I believe Toyota has to have the sensor numbers manually coded to the ecu, which requires a Techstream or similar. Most tire shops will do it for much cheaper than a dealer.

Another option, since you would be opening up the beads anyway, is to install cloned sensors so your car just thinks the same sensors are still there. I have a cheaper ATEQ tpms tool (I forget what model) that can do this. It's not the higher end model that can program new tpms numbers into the ecu, but it can clone existing sensors (many aftermarket ones available). If I really wanted to, I have an Autel that can program new sensors too, but it's easier just to clone - especially if you have multiple sets of wheels/tires. I can put cloned sensors in all sets so no matter what I swap out to, so it makes no difference to the truck.

Many tire dealers will also clone for a modest cost.

Are you sure there is a sensor in the spare? I thought that was done in '08?

 

Yea, they no longer put TPMS in spares and 2008 sounds about right. My 07 has one in the spare.

Most any tire store will install them for $10-$20/ tire. They do not have to rebalance. They can mark the tire and wheel with a reference point so that when they remount everything is in the same position.

Sensors typically last about 10 years, they just recently died in my 2007 so I got more life than most. If the ones in your 2010 are still working they are due to be replaced soon anyway. Even if you keep your old wheels and just buy new tires I'd order new TPMS sensors before buying tires. There won't be any additional charge to have them installed at the same time new tires are being mounted.

For all the internet bitching about TPMS sensors they serve a purpose. They don't replace an air gauge, they give the driver a few seconds warning in the event of a sudden tire deflation while driving. BTDT. The warning gave me time to slowed down and off onto the shoulder of the road before the tire came apart at 70 mph. Spending $80-$120 every ten years is pretty cheap. Skip a Big Mac value meal once a year and you've paid for new sensors.

 

My 2008 has one in the spare too.
