My clutch needs some shenanigans

 

is this for the rod end of the clutch master cylinder ?

 

Affirmative. Going to go to a modified FJ setup at the pedal. Waiting to see if I need a master cylinder change first though.

 

@BillDaCat8 from what you can tell off your research, can this bearing work with the CM piston ?

 

Possibly. Would need to machine a spacer to adapt it to their piston. Would likely need to edit that spacer behind the unit as well to get the clearance just right.

 

Also how did the seals look on your CM set-up, I know you had replaced them fairly recently. Did they roll or rip?

Or do you think maybe the seal surfaces on the CM part you got were out of spec ?

 

I haven’t pulled it apart yet. I’m sure that it’s made wrong though. Lots of other guys running it without leaks. Mine leaked twice with two different seal designs. It’s not getting another chance to leak in my truck.

 

Spacer to mate piston to bearing completed and then assembled.





I ended up machining for a .001” interference fit. Froze the piston and heated the ring. They slid together like butter. I forgot to take pics of that part. Here’s the piston back in the freezer about to be mated to the bearing. You can see the spacer already installed here. Yes, those are ice chunks it is sitting on.



Aaand here it is pushed into the bearing. Took a bit more force this time to push it into place. I’m guessing because my spacer ring had “grown” .001” or so after it was installed on the piston. Next time I’ll be ready for that little change.





Slid it all together and a quick test fit in the RC62F. It would look pretty much the same in the RA60F.

Once I have the new clutch bolted up, I’ll measure that up and will at that point be able to finalize the spacer length needed behind this assembly. Although, it’s not super critical due to the adjustable nature of the Tilton bearing. Just as long as it’s not too thick.

Spec 3+ clutch has landed. This thing is pretty gnarly. Disk is quite heavy.

I know that it’s gonna sound funny. But, it took me a few hours to make that dumb little spacer. Now that I’ve made one, I could probably do it again slightly faster I guess.

I think if there is a demand, we could possibly get a batch of them made by a shop that is more set up for churning out multiple parts quickly.

 

I think a better idea is for everyone to start hounding Tilton to produce a kit for our trucks.
My setup will work on 2nd and 3rd gen trucks. I don’t see why theirs couldn’t do the same.

I went clutch master hydro throughout and it was less than 2000 miles it blew the f out. Speed shifted all the way home and went back to stock. After a tone of email and phone calls I couldnt even get a seal kit.

Sucks having a stage 2 Kevlar and a stock TO. She loves to chatter unless you hammer that pile.
I'm going to try a heavy weight flywheel to see if it will take a bit of the chatter out for me.

 

Regarding your chatter; What did you do to the flywheel when you installed that clutch? Was it machined? If so, on what sort of machine was it machined? A lathe? Or was it an actually flywheel cutting machine? The guys at Spec are recommending that the flywheel be cut on an actual flywheel machine. Cross hatch cut.

 

Probably a lathe. The shop two towns from me does them and it takes a while. I just drove down there and gave it to the machinest and ate lunch then back together.

 

Wasn't much cross hatch just looked like a lathe cut it.
