Hey everyone! The time has come to buy a home and unfortunately in the great state of Oregon where I live it's just not feasible. House prices here are through the roof! So this summer (Covid permitting) I'm loading up the Tacoma and heading east of the Mississippi to find a new state to live! I'd love to hear where everyone is from and pro's and con's of your home state. I'm thinking of up around the Great Lakes area but open to ideas! I've lived in Oregon, California, Washington and Colorado and while each has its ups and downs they are all for the most part super expensive for housing. Let's hear where everyone is from and why their state is the greatest!

Edit: As long as there's restaurants and grocery stores around I'll have work. I repair commercial food equipment.

Some are east of the Mississippi....but beware, other taxes (i.e. property) and fees can make a huge dent..

Use other lists as well. Once you have a place or two zeroed in, go to that Regional Forum in TW and ask around in there.

    Good luck!

I've heard a lot of good things about the Knoxville, TN area.

Michigan as well if you can deal with the winter months.

Wisconsin is nice, it's a beautiful state and a good place to live if you like fishing/hunting/outdoorsy stuff. The winters can be frigid, though.

A friend of mine just moved to Knoxville and I was planning on stopping by to say hi on the trip. It's on my list of places to check out.

I've done two loans for people from washington moving to the texas coast this month.

Let me know if you move to Texas, AR, OK, LA, or NM and need help securing financing.

This thread should have a poll with all 50 states.

Yeah if I had to pick a state right this minute it would be TN. Beautiful place, friendly folks, even if half of them are a little... Rural...

Been run of some, uh, trails, by some "I'm not a citizen I'm an inhabitant, I'm not driving I'm traveling" types, fully off the grid shiners, deliverance banjo level hillumfolk.

Was also once accosted by a Southern Belle in Bryant whom I shit you not looked me straight in the eyes and said: "Jay-A-pan!? You cain't be firm Jay-A-pan, ya ain't look Chinese! Oh, oh, can ye speak Korean!?"

This was a 22yr old college student...

If you can deal with that it is some gorgeous territory out there with fantastic weather.

Thanks I appreciate it. I've got good credit and a decent chunk saved for a downpayment. Unfortunately in S. Oregon right now a shitty little shack is going for 300k. I can't justify staying here if I want to own a home.

It... It broke me... On a deep spiritual level, I still to this day face palm about it and that happened a decade ago.

Fortunately in the moment she was just so excited and advanced the conversation before I could recover my train of thought that had been so nuclearly derailed enough for a rebuttal.

If you are complaining about housing prices, well populated towns like Anchorage are just as bad. Fairbanks is still reasonable now.
