You got some skills my friend! I was kind of eyeballing the newer Tacomas and Tundras just to see what's out there and what kind of features those new trucks have to see if they're better than my old '99 Xtra Cab.

If your cannister is below bed you must clamp the drain hose before pressure/smoke test.

I had this issue on my 2002 about 8 years ago. Started with just 1 pump stopping, I always assume its the gas pump first as I rarely use the same pump or gas station. Then it happened again at a different station. Had the dealer look at it, they found the vent hose clip wasnt holding it in place and in warm weather (almost always herein CA) it would kink a little, they secured it and haven't has that issue in a while.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Check the VSV under the hood and make sure it’s not routed wrong and kinked. My fathers 02 did this after we bought it because whoever did the oil change moved the hose to put a funnel in the oil fill. Never put it back

This thread is giving me bad flashbacks to when I owned my 95 Civic a couple years back (bought it new). One day out of the blue I couldn't fill the tank up all the way anymore, it would always leave me about 2 gallons shy of full no matter where I filled up at. After filling it one day I was idling at a stop in traffic when the guy next to me starts honking and waving frantically while pointing to the rear of my car. I get out and look.......fuel is flowing OUT of the filler neck from the tank!!! WTF?? When the car was moving it wouldn't do it and when the level in the tank dropped a little it wouldn't do it either. I checked every connection and valve I could but never figured out what was wrong. Sold it when I bought my Tacoma! Not Tacoma related I know...sorry for the long post with absolutely no help for the OP!

Edit: Still curious as to why it did that and very interested to see if the OP can diagnose his issue.

Not looking to smoke test for leaks; simply to see if the roll over valve would release. I will check the underhood VSV routing; thanks for the tip!

Assuming you don't have a leak in your system or something is amiss, just go ahead and replace your defective evap vent valve.

Is everything else functional and working okay? My next suggestion would say that you have an issue in the fuel tank.

Is there a diagram anywhere for how it should be routed? Mine has been doing this for a while as well....

Update: VSV under hood hose looks good. Replaced the gas relief valve from the dealer; still did not fix the problem. I think it's time to pull the tank and investigate. This is some odd shit for sure.

Yes. Return hose to filler had cobwebs. Cleared, checked, good to go.
