I was willing to spend the extra money, but at the time I started the thread I did not realize there was a delay due to the pandemic...

Most of the time I don't mind. But on occasion I would rather have a regular plate.

    My old plate

I think most of the states' digital flat plate designs are rather ugly; Arizona's standard issue is colorful and eye-catching, but I liked the embossed metal version better...

As for Florida, I like the standard issue with the orange on it!

Also, do I need the title with me to get a new plate if I already own the truck?

I'll ask my wife, she just picked up a personalized plate. Your laws may differ.

There used to be a requirement for a sign test upon renewal, but they got rid of it a few years ago. They’re good for 8 years, and I kept my Ohio DL until I left the USMC, so I haven’t actually had to renew yet.

I'm guessing the sign test was about as popular as a tax audit on Christmas Eve...? So, you still have an Ohio license?

Nope, had to get an NC license when I got out of the military. For a few reasons, like local VA access, on top of it just being state law to have an NC license as a resident. In the military you can pretty much claim residency anywhere you’ve ever lived in your career, or the state you lived in when you joined. Lots of people use states with no state income tax if they can.

How does it work in Nebraska? In Pennsylvania, plates are issued by tag agencies/notaries; Pennsylvania is the only state I know of where the dealer will issue new plates to the purchaser of a new or used vehicle if they are a Pennsylvania resident. When we lived in Virginia, my dad traded vehicles in on two separate occasions, and the dealer transferred the plates from the trade-in to the new vehicle (The same two plates were on my dad's 1990 Mazda B2600i pickup from 1998 to 2000, on our 2000 GMC Safari from 2000 to 2004, and on our 2004 Honda Odyssey from 2004 to 2006; We lived in Washington state from 2000 to 2002, and registered the Odyssey in Pennsylvania in 2006). However, if you buy a vehicle in Virginia without transferring the tags, you have to new ones at the DMV.

In Nebraska plates are issued in the county you reside in. Smaller towns like where I live is Otoe County and I think the only place to register is The County Seat..or the Courthouse. Larger counties like in Omaha is in Douglas County there are several DMV offices scattered about. When licensing you pay the sales tax rate for the county you reside in, and subsequent yearly registration fees..almost to death..
Edit; I think sometimes there is a option to keep your old plates, but generally if you acquire a new vehicle or used, you'll get a new one.

Is Nebraska particularly expensive to register a vehicle in?

I think so. I think we're 6.5 % sales tax and my registration fee last year was $475.00 it goes down a little each year.
Edit, that's on a 3 year old Tacoma. Sales tax is only once of course.

$140 to register my truck for two years, less than $50 for state inspection/emissions, and $1,150 a year for insurance...

Nebraska is outrageous high compared to Iowa and Missouri.

At least you don't have emissions testing or safety inspections; That makes things a lot less complicated!

And so when someone's death trap doesn't make the safety inspector grade, they just unload it across the border:rofl:
