so i went off roading on saturday thru some mud and dirt and on my way home my battery light, abs, emergency brake light came on. i pulled over and shut the engine off when i tried to turn it back on it just clicked. i got it towed into the dealership that day and they called an inspector out to look at it that wasn't available till tuesday. my certified platinum warranty clearly states that anything happens on and off road is covered and I have a free rental car through toyota. i got my truck back wednesday morning still not running. they denied my claim because they said there was mud/water intrusion into the alternator which caused it to not start. so i got stuck with the $100 inspection fee, $100 for the rental car (which should have covered), and then the $185 for the new alternator. i am so pissed..the warranty clearly states that it covers everything that happens on and off road, and no where does it state that mud or water voids that warranty.

am i wrong for being pissed? i have 70k on it and my warranty is good till 100k. i am thinking of writing a letter to toyota warranty but im not sure if im in the right here. any suggestions?

Warranty's don't cover everything, no matter what...Driving thru enuf water to flood out the alternator could easily be considered "abuse" or "misuse." If you had a part fail in a normal way offroad- that's one thing...but I would't think this would be a warranty coverage. The fee for the work and the part are reasonable if they denied the warranty coverage. The rental car thing is a warranty "perk" too- if they say it's not warranty...It's your bill to pay- not theirs.

It's probably worth it to write a letter to express that you think you got a raw deal- but I wouldn't hope for too much help....

some of this, a little of that
Depends, are they looking at mud/water in the alternator as abuse and then not covered under a warrenty?

edit: dammit Brunes beat me to it. :)

Sounds more like an insurance claim covered under comprehensive. Tell insurance you hit a mud puddle and it died.

Draft a calm, clear, letter stating the facts and include copies of everything. Highlight the part of the warantee that you believe covers the conditions your truck failed in. Keep it calm, no cussin'...

It sounds to me like your dealership sucks ass. That is some bs. You bought an OFF ROAD truck. It is meant to go off road. You should not be held liable and I would fight it.

agreed. just cuz it says 4x4 on the fender doesnt imply its indestructable or waterproof. i had a custy limp in the shop back in '98 with a bike that had been crashed so badly the frame was bent in half and literally most every part on it was damaged. obviously a massive frontal impact. i asked the heavely bandaged guy what had happened and he said "just riding along", which we call JRA in the biz due to the huge amount of like claims we get. turns out he ran headlong into a ditch at high speed and spent the night in the hospital. he sticks to his story demanding a new bike under warranty cuz 'its only a week old and a mountain bike should take any abuse i can give it.' well he was wrong. we did cut him a deal on a replacement but only after he came clean. theres a lesson in there somewhere. good luck.

Is this actually a Toyota warranty? Or is it an aftermarket warranty?

most warranties only cover things that are the manufacturers fault. getting mud or dirt in it technically isn't their fault considering that truck are mainly designed for pavement, i agree that they should fix it but thats how they look at it.

thanks for all the replies...i agree with those who said that just because it says off road on it doesnt mean you can do with it whatever you want and because of the warranty they fix it. although, when i bought the truck from the dealer the rep assured me that any failure of damage that occurs on or off road is covered. i think i am going to write a letter and include all of my receipts and try to get reimbursed for the money.

    My take.....

The warranty will cover something breaking off road. For example, Your climbing a hill, and the cv, or somthing breaks, the alternator dies, radio stops working, etc. Driving into mud, enough to where it gets into the alt., is not a warranty issue. Had you not driven in the mud, and gotten it into the alt., it would be fine. Its kinda like driving into a tree, and telling them the front end is smashed, so fix it. Regretfully, YOU caused the malfunction.

I disagree. I feel this is justifiable. If it was something like he was fording through water thats one thing but he didn't. What if he was driving down the street and hit a big puddle and the same thing occurred? Apparently you can't off road with your off road if you want to be covered under your warranty....

Going off road is fine. Getting mud in the alternator is entirely differnt. Most alternators can shrug off a little water, but mud is a different story. Being as the alt. rides relatively high in the engine bay, you have to really be pushing things to get mud up to it.

Just because it is under warrenty doesnt mean they are going to cover anything that happens. You ruined your alternator but submerging it in mud and water.. This is not in any way toyotas fault and therefore they are not going to cover it.

Its not like you can just go drive into a telephone pole and exspect your warranty to cover the costs of damages,,,
