I don't mind safety inspections so much, but what annoys me about them is that for example it is illegal in Pennsylvania for your fog lights to be able to turn on at the same time as the high-beams...

My plates (in MO) are hundreds of dollars per year. Don’t let Missouri’s 30-some dollar registration fee fool you. One has to pay personal property tax annually on vehicles registered in my county (Saint Louis County) and that paid receipt needs to be presented to pay the registration fee.

At least we can now get 2-year registrations.

 

I bought my 2012 Tacoma down here 3 years ago. The duties are very high and were not worth bring mine down at the time.
52% on 3 yr old vehicles
63% on 4 or 5 yr old vehicles
79% on 6 yr + old vehicles

They determine the duty on the higher amount of either your valuation, or the one in the governments data base.

Cheaper (and less hassle) for us to just buy it down here. But then again vehicles are expensive down here as well.. A new 2021 Tacoma is $64,000 USD. A Tundra $88,000. Even a 'base' Hilux starts at just over $38,000.


The upside is that vehicles will last almost forever down here. I see a lot of older Tacomas and even the occasional T100 driving around.

Would a Costa Rican Taco be legal in America?

 

That I don't know. Mine was manufactured in Mexico, so it might be close to being legal. You'd probably have to contact your DMV or Federal government Dept to see if it is, and what has to be done to get to meet the requirements for import.

 

A local Ford dealer in my area sold a Mustang that was originally sold new in Puerto Rico, but that’s a US territory so it has the same emissions equipment. I’d imagine yours would be legal to register in a state like Florida or Oklahoma where there’s no emissions testing, but somewhere like California or New York where they have strict emissions testing might be tricky.
