Feedback on which year to buy 2017-2020

My wife's truck is a 2008 Taco Access 4x4 (new frame), 4 cyl., manual (110,000 mi) which she uses for errands and taking dogs for daily runs/swims.....I have a 2012 4Runner. Anyhow, she wants to upgrade to a newer model with a few more comforts and features - 2017-2020. So my question is one late-model 4 door Taco year better than others. I've read plenty about tranny issues (2017?) and also the different tech/safety upgrades made each year between trim levels. Would probably look at CPO, low mileage. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

 

Honestly.... it's not worth buying used. They're so similar in price you'd only be paying 3 grand extra for a brand new truck.

 

If you can get the 20 with the LED headlights, go for it. Otherwise not much difference

 

I would buy a 2017.

 

2015

 

Well obviously, but that wasn’t a choice! Don’t cheat

 

The wife would like the safety updates, nav, screen, etc. so not sure 2015-16 qualify.

 

I'll buy your wifes current truck

18+ has Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
-radar cruise
-auto high beams
-pre collision alarm

20+ has a slightly larger nav screen, power seat, optional LED headlights.

If she wants an auto i'd get the newest year you can afford.

 

I waited to buy a 2020 because of the electric seat (adjustable up & down), apple carplay, and led headlights. Also, if you get a 2019 or 2020, have the ECM update done. TSB 0092-20 came out last fall.

I'm tickled that my '17 doesn't have al that safety crap on it. And power seats? How often does one need to press that button????

Apple Car play would have been nice, but I am very content with my Entune system.

 

The electric button is not the point. Its the fact that you can raise or lower the seat. When I was shopping for a new truck, the seat height of the 19 was a deal breaker. In the 20, just being able to lower it the 1/2" made a huge difference in visibility.

 

Only thing I wanted from a '20 was the lights, so I bought that instead of the rest of the truck.

 

Definitely suggest going with the led headlights. My only regret wasn’t waiting for a truck with it

 

2017 doesn't have any issues with lifting and the Toyota Safety Sense system.

 

2020 has Android Auto. Full screen for Google Maps is totally great. Also the electric seat is a significant upgrade in terms of comfort vs the '16-19. Auto trans also much better behaved, although I went with the manual anyway

 

Agreed, just buy new. The resale is crazy so CPO doesn’t save much money.

 

2018 - addition of adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure alert, which are all helpful on long highway drives
2020 - addition of Apple Carplay / Android Auto in the factory head unit, LED headlights in the higher trims

So 2020 would be the best, but you'll be paying close to new-truck prices.

 

My 2017 has BSM, its a decent feature for sure.

 

If you do go for a used one, stay away from Super White. My 2017 is peeling in 3 places on the driver side and its not covered under warranty since I am past the 36k miles. I am currently battling Toyota to repaint my truck, but the best case scenario is that they repaint only the effected areas. Pretty sure I will end up repainting the entire truck before I get to 60-75k (currently at 48k) if Toyota doesn't pay for the touchup. If they actually do the touchup my OCD will probably kick in at 100k and repaint all the other areas.
