Is it worth it

seems like a good deal to me.....I bought my 2012 TRD Sport 2wd with 127,000 miles on Halloween 2020 from a private party for $17K in So CA so it's rust free (mostly except minor salt air stuff).....he wanted $17,500 but took 17K cash.......he had it for 6 years and had done some maintenance but it needed some minor stuff......new headlights (I could have just buffed them out but wanted new), new grill (just for looks) and shocks........here's the write up I did on here about it.. I say pull the trigger if it's accident free......good 2nd gen Tacos are hard to find and getter harder to find.....

Nice looking truck. When I bought mine I was looking at that same truck, year, color etc side by side with mine at the dealership in Jan 2014. I liked the color of yours better, but I liked the stereo and autodim rear view mirror in the 2013 more, so I went with that. I went in pretty blind to the process at the time . Lucked out. It wasn't until much later that I realized how valuable having the rear locker is too, even on a 2wd truck (I didn't even know what it was when I bought it). I don't mind the black after all these years, but still like the pyrite mica color better.

 

lol you came out ahead with a free frame. That should give you another 20 years.

So..... I did a thing..... I pulled the trigger!!

This was private sale so I have to take care of all the paperwork and fees.

Due to pandemic, they haven’t inspected and register the vehicle for this year so I’ll have to bite the bullet on those expenses.

$17,300 for the vehicle plus inspection, registration, taxes, local/state fees, and title application begins me to pennies shy of $19k.

Overall, I don’t think it was a great deal but it’s a fair deal considering condition of vehicle.

 

Yeah it worked out well in the end, it was a gamble at first because back when I bought it the frame lawsuit wasn't quite wrapped up. If it wasn't for the rusted frame the truck would have been priced over 20k for sure.

I lucked out as the shell came with the truck......the shell is a snugtop with all the bells and whistles and the guy paid $2,500......I won't pay that but I'm glad he did!...LOL This is my first truck ( and I've had 13 taco's) with a shell and it's actually super handy for me as I'm in construction.....keep looking on Craigslist, offerup, etc and you'll find one if you're patient...

 

I'd say you got a good deal and congrats!!.....now, be warned.....if you hang out here for a while be prepared to spend your $$$.....these guys have a great way of convincing you (ME!) to spend $$ on stuff that looks cool!!

This summary cannot be ignored!! Although not really acknowledged I would say that any Tacoma with 120K on it needs a full and complete front end rebuild with all rubber/wear parts. Especially if you are looking to get to the 250-300K mark. Factor in the regular maintenance; shocks F&R, fluids, plugs, air cleaner, belt, brakes, diff x2, X-fer, trans fluid just for peace of mind and you are at those numbers if you do it yourself.

Then the I want add on's, in my case Leer camper shell, side steps and updated OR wheel, oh and tires.

So, yea I did all this on a 120K '06 TRD OR 4x4 Access cab I bought 3 years ago for $14.5K that is now at 150K. Dare I say I'm in close to $20K real $$ on a 15 year old truck. Sounds stupid on the surface. I cashed the original purchase so no payments and the above work was spread out over the next couple of years. The truck drives like new, has no apparent issues and more than fulfills my work truck needs. Just a true story of a used Tacoma buyer.

 

What all do you recommend doing? I plan on flushing all the fluids. Engine oil, coolant, brakes, transfer case, front and rear differential. Spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter. New shocks all around and lower ball joints. Something is making noises after the engine runs for a while, I’ll try the belt first but do y’all have any experience with a pulley or tensioner going bad at 135-140k miles?

 

This ^^^. I got my 2008 4x2 Tacoma with 47,000 miles in 2017 for $13,500. The owner was a retired gentleman who wanted to sell it quick. Did all my maintenance at 50k miles, gave it a paint job, and added some accessories and tires for a grand total of about $17,500. I’m looking at buying a brand new Sport 4x4 sometime in the near future to have as a weekend beach truck, but I’m also keeping my 2008 to have as my daily ride.

Same color. The original paint was really faded and the roof was completely gone with a few tiny spots of rust

 

Cool man. I'm also in Texas. Houston to be exact. Where did you take it to get painted and if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?

 

replace all of your idler pulleys and you’ll more than likely cure that problem. Idlers are a known failure point.

Gates makes a set but you will need the Febest tensioner pulley or just replace the bearing in your OEM tensioner.

don’t forget your power steering fluid.
