X-Trek - Grille Insert Option

Looks awesome, are you putting the Toyota emblem on it?

 

no intentions to. Although the TOYOTA or a TACOMA emblem would and has made these look very OEM, I wanted this grill specifically to get rid of all branding and chrome That I could on the truck.

Got mine, looks great!! I think it looks good without the logo and will prob keep it clean. This post is going to focus on installing the TSS sensor. I had to do it over because mine was throwing the "clean dirty sensor code". Once I redid the sensor install and made sure it was centered exactly its been working without any issues. Here is how I made sure on the second attempt I got it centered.



Make sure you disconnect the battery before removing grill and sensor. Also please make sure all the hardware is included. Mine was missing some of the bolts and washers. Not a big deal, but it can be a bummer if you discover that after you have pulled the grille. So the instructions have you mount the sensor to the brackets after the brackets have been installed on the grille, I found it much easier to mount the sensor to the bracket first. It is real hard to tighten the sensor to the bracket after it has been installed on the grill because the backside of the screws are hard to reach. So first mount the sensor to the bracket and tighten it just enough so that you can still slide it around but it will hold its position. Here is the side view of the bracket with the sensor attached.



Next mount the bracket to the grill and also just tighten the bolts enough so everything stays in place but you can still slide around to center the sensor. Try and get the sensor right in the middle of the opening "V" portion of the grille in front of it. Stand the grille up and use a level so that it is nice and straight.



After you have everything nice and pretty use a sharpe or something to mark up the bracket and sensor to record their current positions.



Take everything apart and now tighten up the sensor to the bracket using the marks you just made.



Now reattach the sensor and bracket to the grille, also use the level one last time to make sure you are back to where you were when marking up the bracket. Once you have everything nice and tight add some threadlock if you feel like it. All done! Hope this saves you some time.

Looks very clean, nice touch with the yellow, orange, and red badge mounted to the mesh. I really appreciate the feedback and the detailed write up, thank you. I'm always trying to make my products the best they can be and as user friendly. I will be taking your feedback into consideration for the install guide as well.

I've had a few customers reach out getting the "clean sensor" message and every time we have been able to make it work no problem with minor adjustments. Some fixes have ranged from the sensor not being level to even some some customers who just forgot to plug the sensor back in haha. I did a lot of testing with this grille on several different Tacoma's for long periods of time and never had any issues with it.

Once I get some time I will be making a video install guide to help with the technicalities. At the end of the day if you can bolt 6 bolts together, you can install this grille.

@Coolfinedonewicked send me a picture of how it's mounted and I'm sure we can get it figured out! My guess is that it's just not leveled or maybe the washers didn't get installed under the sensor?

Would love to see some more pics of it on your truck looks great.

 

Did not mean to deter anyone from picking this grill up by the way, sorry. To clarify, I received the grill and had minimal time before it got dark, so I hastily installed it. It is probably one or the other of the possible scenarios you mentioned, completely my own doing. I will reach out if I have any real issues once I get around to installing it properly. Thank you! I will get the DSLR out and try to snap some better photos for you some time soon as well!

 

I received my grill today for my 2019. The first one had some damage and Travis shipped a new one out via second day air. While Travis had the correct address om the package, FedEx delivered it to someone a quarter mile away. While, I was hunting it down, Travis again quickly communicated all of the relevant info from FedEx. The recipient come by while I was ranting at FedEx and sheepishly handed it over. Again, Travis' communication was superb.

I apologize in advance for a lack of pictures, I promise I'll get some soon. I'm also in the process of swapping out my front bumper so the front of my truck is not at it's most photogenic.

Install took about 30 minutes. No issues with the TSS (knock on wood). My camera won't really work with this grill, but that's more a function of my camera than the grill. I found an alternate way of mounting it.

If you are coming from a pro grill, you probably won't have any issues with the TSS if you mount it correctly. The location of the sensor in both the Pro and Xtrek grilles are roughly the same. If you are however coming from an SR, a OR, a Sport, etc grill, you will probably have a lightly higher chance of having issues, but I've seen it go both ways.

Anyway, Travis offers a great alternative to the pro grill and he's a stand up guy.

Also as far as making this compatible on the 2018+'s, it is not necessarily what trim/model truck you have that could cause an error. However, what I have confirmed is that it is important for the sensor to be as level as possible when you relocate it into the X- Trek Grille. It is very easy to level the sensor when relocating it into the grille and if you do happen to get the "clean sensor" message pop up on the dash just take the grille out and level the sensor.

The way the sensor is relocated is almost exactly like how it is relocated on the pro grille. Except the plastic the sensor passes through on the X-Trek Grille is actually thinner plastic than what the sensor has to pass through on the pro grille. So the X-Trek grille actually gives the radar a benefit by having less plastic to cause interference with the radar.

The plastic window on the X-Trek Grille is still plenty strong to protect the sensor from road debris.

Looks sick. What lights are mounted on the grill ??

 

To be honest I'm not quite sure, some type of raptor grille lights. Someone else might be able to chime in and know more.

Also just wanted to let everyone know I'm going to postponing the sale of the 2018+ grilles until further notice.

Seems that leveling the sensor is just a little too technical and not as plug and play as I intended. I will keep you posted with updates as I'm coming up with a new way for the 2018+ grille model to work with the Tacomas and will have them back up for sale when I get the adjustments done.

Front cam install works like a charm on this grille.

 

Took my X-Trek Tacoma to the dealer for the millimeter wave radar and fuel pump recalls on Thursday. The service writer complemented me on the X-Trek grille. They applied the sticky foam to cover the sensor no questions asked. My sensor worked well prior, and did sometimes intermittingly cut-out in heavy rain. The recall fix should help. They also recalibrated the sensor as I have a lift.

 

How much did the realignment cost if you don't mind my asking?
