Factory battery on average lasts about 3 years...or maybe just because of where I live...central Alberta ( :canada: ) where temperatures can drop to -40°C/-40F...and summers can be nearly on the opposite side of the scale :D!

53,000 miles and ~ 3.5 years on my ‘17 original OEM battery. One thing to consider about the topic of this thread is not just where people live but where they live in relation to work, stores where they run errands, etc. If you’re only driving a few minutes on average to get to your destination, my experience has been your battery won’t be getting a full charge from the alternator after each start up which can lead to premature issues with said battery.

I would also like to see some info on this with some real facts. The main reason the batteries are exchange is to keep the lead in the US! There are only like 3 or 4 manufactures of flood cell batteries in the US and dozens of rebranded sellers. Now that does not mean it is recycled here that is where the problem lies it comes back to us but in the mean time is is killing tens of thousands of people in poor countries. 99% of the lead is reusable.

Factory batteries are usually good around 4 years. My last car (crappy Chrysler 300) died after only 3. I have had a few go 5 years but then I change it as I dont want to push it and get stuck somewhere.

All i can say is these newer batteries toyota is using must be some sort of remanufactured cheap crap. I never had any truck battery fail in the past until around 7-8 years, and i did several trips to quebec in the dead of winter. Those batteries would sit out in the cold at -30 to -40 for close to a week.
We had one guy with a new ford 150 that his battery froze so bad we had to sit it in the motel bathroom sink to warm it up enough for it to come back.

Yeah, but mileage isn't one of the factors so why do post it? If I said my battery lasted 10K, what would it matter? I could drive 2k a year or I could drive 10K a year. The mileage means nothing in terms of battery life.

My OEM battery lasted almost 5yrs. I replaced it 3-4 months ago while still in service, never failed to start, but the cells were getting weaker (via-monthly hydrometer test).

I replaced it with a Walmart 2yr warranty with the same ccA capacity as factory.

Moreover, I also put the new one on a trickle charge for a day and a half before putting it into service and expect to get 5yrs out (with maintenance) of it also.

Because it tells you how often the vehicle was used. In my case, average 3.7k miles per year, the truck was hardly used. It sat for 2 or more days at a time quite frequently. For someone that puts 20k miles per year, they start that vehicle almost every day and got more use out of that battery then I did mine.

Mileage has little or no bearing on battery life. Non, nada.

If it did, battery warranty would be based on mileage and or months just like engine/drivetrain and such.

The battery is meant to be charged (re-used) up to its stated battery life (warranty) and if it fails before the stated period, it is usually replaced on a pro-rated basis.

    Hope that helps

Nice. I was going to say 4-5 years and your map falls into my personal experience in NJ.

I bought a 2013 Highlander new in January of 2013. When I traded for the Tacoma in November of 2020, it had the original battery and 137K miles. I'm in SE Georgia, and it gets warmish here about 6 months a year.

Not really helpful. I was hoping if someone would explain why same OEM battery fails in one year versus 3 year or 5 years, etc. Basically, why it fails before its stated period. I agree. The battery doesn't rack up mileage so mileage is not a direct cause. But are there indirect causes?

Just get the largest capacity battery you can fit in the truck, and it'll last longer.

largest capacity battery won't do well (live as long) in hot climate operating conditions. They perform better in very cold climate. Thus the name die hard?

The main reason a battery fails prematurely is poor maintenance. When a battery is made, it is deep charged for 18-32 hrs depending on the type battery.
That is the last time a battery will ever see a deep charging cycle again. Unless of course it falls into the hands of a gear-head like me.

Things that will shorten battery life:
    Bouncing it around
    Heat
    Jolt charging (start/stop)
    Improper electrolyte levels
    Dirty/corroded terminals

Things that will help battery life
    A steady work platform
    Moderate weather
    proper electrolyte maintenance levels
deep charging cycles (or regular/occasional long trickle charging)
Clean terminals (sealing helps to keep terminals clean)

    Hope that helps

I've found that buying deep cycle batteries at walmart for my boat last longer than those sold at auto part stores. I still have 2 of them on my shelve now from 2015 that will go back in the boat this spring for another season.

My 16 bought in November of 15 is still on the original battery. 92,000 on my odometer and live in a place we get winter.
