What about the Trans-American Trail? VA-OR by mostly offroad/gravel?

Sounds like something a little booger welding could take care of.

I've seen videos of the Eastern Portion. Doesn't look like anything not totally doable in a stock truck by yourself. i'm sure there's maybe a spot or 2 here or there, but all in all looked pretty mild.

    Next year.

So. I have a metric shitload of road trip ideas. AK, NW Territories (which actually may happen this year o_O), etc. There are two which I need to do before I move to Austin: The cannonball run (NYC to LA, would want to do that when I'm still near NYC) (but I am not timing it, just for the fun of it sort of thing) and then UP Michigan, which is just far away from Austin, but a 5-day'er from RI at the most, I could probably do it in a long weekend or maybe 4 days.

I can add the Trans-American trail to the list. Might be a while away though. I would do that out of Austin, I have a plan to hit up PNW/AK from there already, I can modify that plan to add the trail :D

I think I want to add it to my list eventually. I think it can be done in a stock truck.

I'll pull the camper to Yellowstone etc, that way I can just hop in at a rest stop and pass out. My plan is a 2 week trip, probably do Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse, then burn to Yellowstone, camp for a bit, head south to the Grand Canyon, then probably head straight home.

My trip plan was home > DC > TN > Amarillo > Denver > Vegas > LA then "home" (whatever route) BUT y'all mention grand canyon....plans changed!
Home > Amarillo direct, pretty much, then > Grand Canyon > Vegas > LA > Pheonix > Tucson (unless I got that order backwards) > Santa Fe > Texas West to East > Along the gulf coast out to Savannah > DC > Home

Or there abouts - basically direct to Amarillo then enjoy the desert and the southern heat from coast to coast, hit DC on the way home.

I plan to rip out the passenger seat and set up a sleeping platform like this:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ad-and-exploring.407850/page-25#post-15224437

It's me and dog (wife hates road trips and sleeping in the truck....I don't blame her, but, still)

I will be able to do the same - rock up, and sleep, but no camper! :D

I was going to do that build later this spring and use it for camping and trips this summer but there's a chance I go to Florida on Friday o_O last minute, so, I need to get cracking on that like tomorrow.

I'm trying to think of what to see on the way back from the grand canyon tbh.

Edit: It'll just be me and the dog unless I'm otherwise entangled when the trip happens. Either way my camper sleeps 2 + a dog comfortably. 2 + 2 dogs was not comfortable but the dogs hated each other for some reason.

My favorite part of this, is I put in Grand Canyon to New Columbia PA and apparently there's a PA Grand Canyon like 2 hours north of you I was like WTF that's way too close.

    If it was me:
    upload_2021-1-25_17-2-18.jpg

    upload_2021-1-25_17-2-29.jpg

Mountain View - underrated. I found it on accident. I wouldn't recommend some of the mountain roads to get there through the Ozarks if you have a trailer, unfortunately, but this route looks good for trailer.

Again if it was me - I would do that southern route through TX instead of OK. OKC and Tulsa are nice cities but meh. I would take the longer route and less busy.

Heading up to Prudhoe Bay is definitely on my list. But that trip needs almost a month.

It's a tiny 12' long trailer. I've pulled it up to Spruce Knob Lake campground which has some narrow ass roads and tight switchbacks too.

My plan was to go from DC (im about 40 miles west) > STL > Denver > Bozeman MT (where I am picking up my GFC)

Then on the way home, Yellowstone > SLC > Grand Junction/Gunnison NF > Memphis/Clarksville TN > then home.

The midwest does not excite me at all. I dont really have a desire to go towards Mt Rushmore either. But there are some people that Id like to see along the way, which is why I have some odd cities that I am going to hit. Total trip time Id like to see is ~2 weeks. But its all an estimate, because Im not really a planner. I just want to do 12 hour drive days, with possible mini meets/food spots/major city points, that are along the way.

A friend recommended hitting Redwoods but then I'd have to contend with CA traffic for my leg to the Grand Canyon which doesn't interest me.

There are lots of BLM places out that way, check the reservation system of the National Park, they all are different and some where just coming online this year. We learned the hard way on our xcountry adventure this past June, the Rockies had hourly reservations while Yosemite needed to be reserved days before, or get one of the few spots available that morning.

the Canyon was on fire and roads were closed when we were out that way. The small crowds were great, doubt that will ever happen again.

Worth it, and check out Glass Beach then drive north. We crossed through Death Valley and went to Sequoia then up coast. Was worth it and Cali was the place we disliked the most on our adventure

I grew up in AK, and went up to Prudhoe bay once, it's a long but awesome drive.
