MILD WINTER DAY: A storm system is forming northwest of Alabama, and is set to bring lots of snow from northern Kansas to near Chicago over the next 36 hours, where winter storm warnings are in effect. But we will be in the warm sector of the system, and we project temperatures in the low 70s this afternoon, almost 20 degree above average for late January in Alabama. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and while much of the day will be dry a few scattered showers are possible.

A tightening pressure gradient will bring increasing winds to the state later today and tonight; south winds will gust as high as 25/30 mph at times. And, with the approach of a cold front, a few showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight. SPC has defined a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for parts of West Tennessee, Arkansas, and North Mississippi. This clips the northwest corner of Alabama, but for most of our state severe storms are not expected tonight due to warm air aloft/poor lapse rates.

TOMORROW/WEDNESDAY: The front will stall out tomorrow somewhere around U.S. 80, so the chance of rain will continue over the southern half of the state… North Alabama will be dry with more clouds than sun. The high tomorrow will be in the 60s statewide. Then, a wave of low pressure forms on the front, and rain is likely statewide tomorrow night into at least part of the day Wednesday. The weather stays mild Wednesday with a high in the 60s; rain amounts between now and Wednesday will be in the 1-2 inch range.

REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday will be colder with a mostly sunny sky… the high will be in the 48-52 degree range. Then, we drop down into the 20s early Friday with a clear sky and light wind. Friday will also feature a good supply of sunshine with a high in the mid 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday looks dry; the sky will be partly sunny with a high in the low 60s. The next weather system will bring rain to the state Saturday night into part of the day Sunday… for now it looks like the most widespread rain comes from about midnight Saturday night to noon Sunday. Sunday’s high will be in the upper 50s for most places.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks dry Monday through Wednesday with seasonal temperatures… highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. The next chance of rain comes later in the week, most likely Thursday or Thursday night. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: On the morning of January 25, 1940, the headlines on the Birmingham Age-Herald screamed that more cold was in store for the state. And it had already been very cold. Since an arctic cold wave invaded the state on the night of the 18th, overnight lows had been in the teens or single digits every morning except for the morning of the 23rd when the low was 24F. The average temperature of 21.3 for the seven day period ending January 25, 1940 still stands as the ninth coldest seven day period in Birmingham history.

The 1940 cold wave still holds most of the cold wave records in Magic City history, including seven of the ten coldest seven day periods, the three coldest ten day periods as well as seven of the top ten coldest ten day periods and the top nine coldest fourteen day periods as well.

    Morning fellas!

Passively searching for some 17” wheels... in the flavor 8-10” wide with -20 to -40 offset

The more beat up, the better. I don’t want to get a new set that I’m just going to rub all over rocks...

If you can wait a little bit I'll have my set of 5 up for grabs soonish. 9 -12 offset there aren't that many offerings in the offset you are wanting. I use them in conjunction with 1.5" spacers which will also be going bye bye.

Im thinking of buying the vors wheels which im almost positive are from the same factory that makes the vtx terra wheels. Every aspect is the same down to the approval stamps on the wheels and has been confirmed the center caps from vtx work with them. set of 4 on ebay 17x8.5 -12 is $600 bucks lol. For some reason their website its like $880

I'm going bead locks. There are a lot of Asian wheel manufacturers like that. They somewhat knock off wheels from enkei, FN, Work, KMC, etc. People can but them on Alibaba (or whatever it is) relabel them and resell them. All the hard work of DOT approval and design is done. They aren't bad. That 8.5 -12 will sit about like mine without spacers maybe a hair more poking out. If my mental math is right.

That's why I have narrowed down my beadlock choices to a select few. One of which comes in at 28 lbs. 4-6lbs lighter than it's competitor but it is kinda a meh wheel when it comes to looks. But I have a good PC up here my buddy suggested that I can get something done to make them more blingy. Most beadlock wheels they are leaving off the weight of the ring and bolts on the advertised weights so this one will be just over 30lbs. Now I'm onto deciding on a tire. Really looking at the interco SXIIs as they have a 4 ply sidewall and are fairly light weight. But I have a lot more research to do on tires. Like you even with my mighty v6 (oxymoron) I still pay attention to weight if you don't eventually you'll end up with some big elephant that doesn't do well at all.

I’m in no rush, I’ll keep that in mind. What kind of wheels do you have and what are you thinking for them?

What do y’all think of Rock Trix wheels?

My trucks at the limit weight wise. Honestly you'd be surprised at how it pushed all the weight i have when its fully loaded. But i wouldn't want to make it any heavier. I figured i keep the wheel/tire weight the same just try to stay around same tire weight in a 17 and cut back on wheel weight in a 17.

So there is an old saying we had in drag racing 1 lb in the wheel and tire was worth 100lbs inside the car. In other words weight has a greater affect on performance at the wheel and tire than it does static. Especially since we are running such tall packages where the weight is so far from where the power is transferred it has to work that much harder.

Yea i heard for each tire you can multiply each pound you add X3. so if you added 5 pounds each tire thats like adding an extra 60lbs to the truck.

Idk like 600 or something around that. They are the XD Machetes in silver with black ring retail is like 280 or something per wheel.

Rock Trix is a newer manufacturer they were only doing Jeep wheels didn't realize they were starting to expand to other manufacturers.

Look at some of the offroad offerings from weld some of them look pretty slick too. I like Dirty Life because they have the DT1 and 2 that you can go bead lock regular ring or rash guards on.

SUMMARY…Scattered strong thunderstorms are expected across the Mid-South into Middle TN this evening. Some risk for tornadoes may necessitate a watch in the next couple of hours.

DISCUSSION…Strong mid-level short-wave trough is ejecting across the central Plains this evening. The more appreciable height falls will spread across the Mid-MS into the OH Valley region. Along the southern fringe of this stronger large-scale forcing, robust convection has recently developed across portions of western TN where surface dew points have risen into the mid-60s with surface temperatures in the lower 70s. This activity should spread east-northeast along a corridor that is destabilizing just south of a well-defined warm front. Ample shear/buoyancy exists for supercells (possibly tornadic supercell ongoing over Fayette County TN) and there is increasing concern/confidence that other organized longer-lived storms may develop.

Farther south along the Pacific front, showers are gradually deepening from northwest MS into northeast LA. Some lightning is noted with the stronger updrafts but activity has struggled to organize. It’s not entirely clear how many organized supercells can/will develop along this zone, but shear/buoyancy do favor some tornado threat. A tornado watch may be warranted for this activity in the next couple of hours.
