Butter smooth IFR flight today to drop off my plane for some avionics upgrades. I’m having a new (to me but still old) audio panel and nav/comm installed. Hopefully they’ll be able to wire the #2 nav/comm to the Garmin G5’s so that I’ll be able to overlay 2 nav sources on the HSI and then be able to remove both of those CDI’s from the panel. If not, then I’m at least removing the LOC only CDI. My new #2 nav/comm will have a glideslope. Woo! I’m swapping the audio panel for a PMA6000M and the nav/comm for an SL30. I’m excited! Depending on where the cost comes to, I’m going to see about also removing the marker beacon antenna and associated wiring as well. I don’t like having unused equipment taking up weight and creating drag.

Eventually, I’d like an engine monitor to go in place of those 2 CDI’s so I may as well go ahead and free up the space on the panel and shave half a pound.

Thanks, I’m looking forward to having a newer audio panel and #2 nav/comm to completely get rid of the old equipment

Have any of y'all used an online ground school? I'm starting to research my options.

For what? I used the King online ground school for private and instrument and it was very dull but full of information. John and Martha king are grandma and grandpa of general aviation, haha. A friend of mine is going through his private training right now and used the Sporty's online ground school and he said it was fine. Sporty's is cheaper than the King stuff, but most people don't use multiple platforms so it's hard to really have good comparisons between the options out there.

    Oops, my PPL.
I’ve seen some ads for the sporty’s option, never heard of King.
I have an Amazon tablet for work that I can use but I also would like to get my laptop screen repaired and have the ability to use it, my phone screen is too small to use for studying so I don’t know that I would benefit from having an app based program.

The only reason I used the King stuff was because I was in a part 141 flight school and that’s what the curriculum used. I actually have old school DVD sets for the King lessons for private, instrument and commercial. One of my early mentors gave them to me just as something cool to have. I’ve never played any of the disks, but the King’s have been around for a long time.

I've still got my King dvds somewhere. Yeah they're quirky and dated but I learned from them.

When the airfield manager can't figure out what a snow plow is in a place that gets snow every year you just bust out your own snowblower.

The place I work at...in Dallas...just recently bought a brand new Chevy 2500 4x4 gasser and a snow plow..LOL. I'm no accountant but I guess they had to spend some money on something. I bet you that we are the only people in the zip code who have a snow plow, excluding the highway authority.

    Update on the airplane...

I discovered that the SL30 that I am installing will not be able to display its NAV data on the G5s along with the 430W NAV data. My original plan of removing the two CDIs in favor of having both NAV sources displayed on the G5 is busted. The only way to display 2 NAV sources on the G5 is to have 2 NAV sources with 429 connectors. The SL30 uses rs232 wiring and is thus not able to share the G5 with the 430W. The new plan is to keep the 430W paired to the G5s and pair the SL30 to my existing #1 CDI and then remove the #2 CDI. I'm not mad about this plan. Keeping it completely separate definitely has its own benefits and I was still going back and forth whether or not I wanted all my course data limited to only one HSI display. This just made my decision for me. Cool.

My son is using Gleim through his flight school. It seems to be a good option. Not to derail this topic but he signed contract and accepted an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Scored in the 97% on his AFOQT. Detachment commander told him unless he really screws up, should get a pilots slot. Keeping fingers crossed for him.
