Why’s that? My ‘21 OR double cab was built in Texas, the State I bought it in. What determines where it’s built? I’m guessing it’s random? Is there a difference?

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
I understanding is that only Taco Double Cabs are assembled in Texas and all others in Mexico.
Guess I forgot that hers is a Double Cab. Sorry @farmtacoma.

My understanding is that all Tacoma production is shifting to Mexico in 2021 with the exception of a few specialty models that will remain in Texas and they will eventually be phased out as well. My 2021 TRD OR DCSB was built in Guanajuato, Mexico and from what I can see the quality is excellent. Mine was built on 10/26/20 and I did not even think to check on what day of the week that was until this discussion. It was a Monday. (?)

My Tacoma was built on a Monday - no issues at all. You are right that with the way shift work is done now, it makes no difference.

BTW, I'm still driving a '96 BMW Z3 that I bought new - it was built the day after the Labor Day holiday in South Carolina. If any day had a curse, that would be it. My Z is still running strong 25 years later.

In 2020, the only Tacomas made in Texas were Pros and manual transmission double cabs, I believe. That is slowly transitioning as they shift all Tacomas to the Mexico plant.

If your VIN starts with a 3, it was made in the Mexico plant, 5 is Texas.

Mines an auto  In fact, looking around at the dealer I bought mine, something like 80% or more are made in Texas. This includes SR, SR5, TRD’s, pretty much any trim. Being an hour or so away from the factory, it would make sense. There doesn’t appear to be any “certain” models built only in one factory.

Your is a 2021, though. I think Covid implications and tooling up for production in Mexico might have changed things for this year.

Not that it really matters, but this might help clarify:

"Currently, the Tacoma is built in two manufacturing centers, the first being the aforementioned San Antonio, Texas, facility. The other location is the Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California facility, in Tijuana, Mexico, which has been assembling Tacomas since 2004. The second Mexico-based plant tasked with building the Tacoma is located in Guanajuato, Mexico. That plant’s Tacoma line began running in December of 2019."

I assume in 96, they didn't have that plant fully automated / robotized, right? I had two BMWs built at the new plant ... one on a Monday and the other on a Friday ... never had a problem with either ...

You are absolutely right. There are so many controls on the production process that it hardly matters.

The plant was only partially automated. I got to take quite a few tours through the years whern they held the Roadster Homecomings at the plant.

Really neat. When I got my X3 Diesel (I so miss that diesel) they sent me a video link so I could watch the truck move through production. Until final assembly (installing seats and stuff at the end, I large percentage of the production was done by robots -- not sure if they were aware it was a Monday, Friday or Holiday, though. :)

I’m getting excited on your behalf! Woohoo.

We just got a tandem bike in last week after years of negotiation and a final purchase at Christmas. It’s exciting to finally be on the road. Best part is you can have lots of fun with the truck in the rain, bike not nearly so much.

I didn't realize Tacomas were made so close to Mexico city as well. So There are 3 Mexico tacoma plants? I always thought baja was the only one.

Good morning TW family. To answer your question, I am not sure where truck was built. Once I get the window sticker/dealer daily report, I will post it here.

My 2001 Tacoma DCSB was built in the GM/Nummi Plant in Fremont, CA. It ran 246K miles under my stewardship, 0 problems, aside from maintenance. It did need a new radiator at 210K. 20 year ago, people used to say "American made vehicles were trash," and one should ONLY buy a J vin vehicle.

I don't know much about vehicle manufacturing. So I am not sure if location matters more, of the company matters more. We have family with Nissans built in Tennessee, and seems to always have problems, but Toyota built in Indiana or Japan, no problems. Maybe luck of the draw?

    Interesting discussion for sure!

I personally do not think it matters where it's built. Toyota wouldn't move their operations to Mexico if it would tarnish what they are best known for; reliability. If anything, the investment they have put into new Mexican plants would increase quality. I just find it interesting, and I will admit I'm a little bias towards Texas-built trucks being a Texan myself :)

Thanks for the updates and congrats! I'm glad you're making progress.

Location does not matter. Toyota has the same QA/QC in all their plants and they are monitored to make sure every plant adheres to their standards. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

You’ll know where it was built if you have the VIN# already; if it starts with a 3 it’s built in Mexico if it starts with a 5 it’s built in the US. The first digit of the VIN is the country of assembly.

    Excited to see your truck!
